Would you feel safe placing a laptop right next to an unshielded speaker?
Just wondering how powerful those magnets really are.

No. The magnet could affect the hard drive. At least I think it can.

I know the magnet can do it I just wonder what kind of proximity I would need to feel "safe"

Well, to see the effect on a picture tube you can be about 3 or 4 feet away. I would assume you should be further away than that with your laptop. It could mess up the heads in your floppy too.

Try headphones, they are much more convenient.
You shouldn't have any problems with the LCD screen, but drives are effected by magnets.HT Optoma HD25 LV on 80" DIY Screen, Anthem MRX 300 Receiver, Pioneer Elite BDP 51FD Polk CS350LS, Polk SDA1C, Polk FX300, Polk RT55, Dual EBS Adire Shiva 320watt tuned to 17hz, ICs-DIY Twisted Prs, Speaker-Raymond Cable

Unless it is a really really strong magnet on the drivers it probably would not cause anytrouble. Back in my days as a computer tech we played around with some olk harddrives and magnets and found that they are much better shielded than one would think.HT
