I second that. Be safe everyone and please get out of it's way.

This is nuts! 165mph and growing stronger by the hour. Scary to think what it may become. Go to weather.com and check out the satellite photos. What a monster!

Y'all run up to Russ's haunt for some rum and BBQ now, ya hear!

In seriousness, I hope you are all ready for this one.

This hurricane is extremely tightly wrapped, it's gonna be BAD. It's expected to intensify more as it reaches the center of the Gulf.

    God bless.

Here's to wishing that high pressure systems stays put a bit longer to push that beast away from Houston and more towards Brownesville.

Edit: For everyone who hasn't, Fillup your tank TODAY!!! That sucker is headed for the heart of US refinery operations and gas supplies will be messed up for weeks, if not months.

Polkfest style, picked up a handle of Beam, case of MHL, pound of beef jerky, can of peanuts, carton of cigs, plenty of Top Ramen, and topped the truck off today.

    Yeah babe. Bring it on.

Read the book 'State of Fear', by Michael Crichton, and you'll be cured of all the Global Warming crap. Also pay attention to all the factual sources he used at the end of the book. ;)

The arrogance of Human Beings that believe that man has the power to affect Mother Nature is just astounding.

I've heard rumors that it's taking people 10 hours to make the 3-4 hour drive from Houston to Dallas. Hotels in the DFW area are filling up quick...this is really nuts. Those poor New Orleans people who were moved to the Astrodome now have to be moved again...I feel really bad for those folks....you know they are saying 'Why God? Why me?'

The only thing that I'm worried about is hail and possible flooding...we're expecting 10+ inches of rain from this storm.

    Cycles....

The majority of real "hurricane experts" (not speculators) will say this is just a cycle that happens every few decades. For example in 1915 both New Orleans and Galveston/Houston were hit by two different cat. 4 hurricanes.

Funny (not in a haha way) that even the earth has it's cycles . Kind of like we need forest fires for blue berries and for certain seeds to start growing.

San Antonio has doubled lately- with all the Hurricanes around. I feel bad for the New orleans folk that were moved to Galviston and Houston...cause they are on the move again. 1900 was when Galveston was last crushed...almost 105yrs ago! If the Storm keeps its slight turn- that city will be saved. Its 17ft sea wall would be no match for 20ft storm surge they are expecting. Lets all hope for the best!

That was the "Great Galveston Hurricane". The "1915 Galveston Hurricane" was no cupcake, but the town had not built back up as much becaue of the one in 1900 so the devastation was not as bad.

just a note to demiurge....global warming is a fact. I hope your not implying that it isnt happening. Now, the extent to which man is affecting the process is debatable. I feel, based on the evidence that I've seen, that we are probably at least partially responsible, though not the most major factor. The earth has gone through many more extreme periods of warming than what we are seeing now. However, those that say that global warming is a myth are either ignorant, have some political aex to grind, or just plain have their heads in the sand. Some of the most respected and knowledgable scientist in the world (many of which are right up here in Alaska and one of whom is a former professor of mine whom I have the utmost respect for) just released the most extensive, most peer reviewed report on global climate change ever produced and their findings are hard to refute. The earth is getting warmer and people have contributed to it like it or not. I would pay more attention to the scientists who make a living studying these things than I would to the guy who wrote Jarrasic Park!

That other disturbance is Tropical Storm Philippe, headed into the North Atlantic rather than towards the U.S. mainland.

Still two months to go in the Atlantic hurricane season though.

Official Notice Email from the University of North Texas:

UNTs emergency preparedness team is working with local emergency management officials to determine how the university can help support some of the more than 1 million people who are leaving the Galveston and Houston areas in advance of Hurricane Rita.

Local officials have submitted a request to the American Red Cross to open a shelter in Denton. People looking for shelter in Denton should call the Red Cross at (940) 384-0880 .

In addition, students, faculty and staff should know that while UNT expects to be open for business as usual next week , it is unknown how Hurricane Rita will affect weather in North Texas.

In the event of severe weather , students, faculty and staff should check the UNT Website www.unt.edu or tune in to the local media for information about delays or closings.

Also, take a minute to learn about your buildings evacuation and sheltering plans, which can be found at http://web2.unt.edu/riskman/index.php?section=evacprocmaps

Topped the tank off today at $2.69/gal, which is where it's been for about a week now.

Well, no, it most certainly is not a fact. Such a claim is just blatantly false. Rather than just trying to debunk my request that the book be read...why not actually read it? Also it should be noted that Michael Crichton is a Graduate of Harvard Medical School and is a M.D. So it's a nice attempt on blowing his credability off because he wrote Jurassic Park (not to mention you're taking the Hollywood Adaptation of the book as the basis of your scoffing).

He's also wrote a lot of other top selling books about medicine and other scientific interestes, but I digress....

The book is a complete de-bunking of all of the eco-terrorists out there who want to scare people into believing that man is destroying the earth and in effect controling the weather. That's just absolutely absurd and it shows the arrogance of humanity.

Also all of the respected scientists (whom you don't name or cite) don't have any data that coincides with anyone elses. In the end they end up with a hypothesis through incomplete data. One of the most interesting things was the time tables that were used. People using a 100 year span of time which would give you one set of results, a set of results that depending on your cause could be less than desireable. Once the results we published they would switch the span to 30 years and it would give you a totally different set of results and could thusly suit your agenda.

This kind of stuff happens all the time in the scientific community and is just one small example of the crap that goes on.

I'd encourage you to read the book, but if you make your living on this kind of stuff where billions and billions of R&D (tax money) comes flowing in from the Government there is no real reason to get factual results.

This is a whole other topic, but someone floated the assertion out there and as usual I ate it up.

So thanks for telling me that my belief that your OPINION of Global Warming is crap makes me Ignorant, politically motivated, and that I have my head in the sand. I'm also a hunter and a fisherman. I consider myself more of a conservationist than most, and especially more than all those vegitarian pot smoking hippies out there who want to scare people into buying all this Global Warming BUNK.

There's a difference between caring about the world around you and believing that you control the weather with what kind of paper you wipe your **** with, or can in any way affect it. You can't. The world has been around for approx. 4.55 Billion years. How far does your data go back? ;)

    Exactly.
