Dolby Digital on PS2

I have a Denon 2805 that is hook up to my PS2 with optical cables. When I use it to play games or movies that are labelled as Dolby Digital the receiver does not play back in Dolby Digital. When I watch a DD movie on the satilite dish it works. I don't know if I have missed something in the set up.

I'm not sure (I don't have PS2), but I would guess there is a main set-up menu in the PS2 like a DVD player has. In this menu, there should be an option to enable digital output..

    hope this helps..

In the start up menu thingy for the PS2, you need to play with the options. There's an audio option that allows DD/DTS.

Unfortunately, there are no DD5.1 PS2 games. All of them are either PLII, stereo, or some mixture of the two. Just one of the reasons I used to be in the PS2 camp and jumped over to Xbox.

I went back and looked at the set up in PS2 and I have the "digital out" set at on and when I turn it off there is no sound. When I put in a movie that has the Dolby Digital symbol on it the receiver plays it in "DOLBY PLII CINE". If I'm watching a movie that is in DD on the dish the receiver displays "DOLBY DIGITAL". I am using the cable that came with the PS2 to connect it to the receiver, I just unhooked the audio conections and plugged in an optical cable. Could my problem have something to do with not having the proper cable?

    Thanks for your help.

Yes, to get the digital sound output from the PS2, you need to use the optical cable.

Paul - also make sure your receiver is set for playing DD when it receives that sort of signal. On my setup, I could make everything that comes into the receiver play PLII and some other sorts of things.

I'd like to point out that there is at least one game (SSX3) that has a DTS soundtrack. I think Gran Turismo 3 might too.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.
