Well, for the fifth year in a row, the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend has gone down. The PFD is the check that all Alaskan residents get for living in the state and the amount of the check is based on a five year average of stock market investments. The principal in the fund now totals over $31 billion. This years check is $845.76. Less than last year, but still, not a bad check just for living here.....

If my family and business were there I'd live there in a heartbeat.

I recall hearing about this years ago. WOW, not a bad deal! Being paid to live there. What are the seasonal changes like up there? Tax rates and cost of living compared to other states? Babe factor (always important)?

Need any Network Engineers up there? :D

    Maryland sucks!

    "Babe factor (always important)?"

Last I heard, and I'm probably wrong, but it's a 5:1 male to female ratio.

    I'll stay in Ohio, thank-you-very-much :D

Lets see if I can address soem of these critical questions:

    1. Babe factor: when I first came up to Alaska in 1988 (to Fairbanks), the male:female ration was about 7:1. Now, I believe it is about 4:1. Better, but not stupendous. Lots of babes in the two "big" cities Anchorage and Fairbanks. In Seward, where I now live, there are only about 3000 or 4000 people total, so needless to say, there is not a lot to choose from, though you'd be suprised how many pretty women there are here.

    2. Seasonal changes: this is a tough one a really depends on where in the state you live. Remember, Alaska is the biggest state in the union at over 500,000 square miles. We have everything from temperate rainforests in the south east, to arctic tundra on the north slope. I have only been in Seward for about 4 months, but I lived in Fairbanks for 17 years. Up there, we had two seasons: winter and July!

    3. Tax rates and cost of living: we have no state income tax and many places have no sales tax. In terms of cost of living, it is more expensive than the lower 48, but its actually cheaper in the cities here than it is in some big cities on the outside. Most government employees get a 25% cost of living allowance. I've gotten used to the prices.

Dont know if they need network engineers up here. I'm a biologist...

If you have computers, you'll need network engineers.

well...start looking for work. I would suggest starting in Anchorage and Fairbanks, as this is where the biggest populations bases are. The capital Juneau is another place to look, but there are no roads in or out of there, so I dont know if you would be willing to live in a place like that. For me, I need to able to drive away.....
