I'm going on a mission this year. I'm going to put together again the first (decent) stereo system I had in 1978. I've got to find:
1. Pioneer SX-780 receiver
2. Pioneer CTF-500 cassette deck
3. Pioneer PL-518 turntable (w/Shure V15 cartridge, gotta keep it legit)
4. Pioneer HPM-40 speakers
5. Some really cheesy interconnects and speaker wire
Time to hit the "bay" this will be fun

Have fun. I still have my late 70s rig:
Pioneer SX-3700 receiver
Pioneer CT-F650 cassette player/recorder
Benjamain Miracord 50H II turntable
Large Advents
I have all of the pieces, just haven't put them together lately.
Nostalgia can be fun.
My first hifi receiver was made by the Concord Electronics Co.circa 1970. I have tried but cannot find any info about it. They were not very big/popular and have long been out of business. I don't know any model #s or specs, just the name. I doubt I'll ever find out anything about it. That receiver along with the above turntable and a pair of AR 4x speakers (which I still have) was my first real stereo."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

Don't do it! I did this last year and was so sadly disappointed. It didn't sound at all the way I remembered it.

I just happen to have a CTF-500 laying around. It needs new belts but is in otherwise pretty good condition. Yours for the cost of shipping, if you want it.Setup:

My VERY first "hi-fi" was a Fischer receiver/turntable deal that actually sounded really good. I believe it was a "tubed" affair, but not sure, A neighbor gave it to me for cleaning up his yard. I thought I was in heaven man. That was around 1973 if I remember right, and the neighbors name was Tim Wilkinson---I'll never forget Tim for hooking me up.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -

Not ready to pull the trigger just yet, but I really appreciate your gesture brotha. I'll definitely keep it in mind.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -
Ok, so you are on a mission, hitting the bay and so forth - but aren't ready to pull the trigger on a freebie (on your list) form another forum member?Check your lips at the door woman. Shake your hips like battleships. Yeah, all the white girls trip when I sing at Sunday service.

Still debating wether I'm going to bother with the cassette deck or not, I may go with an old Pioneer CDP in-lieu of the cassette OR focus on the turntable only. Albums are easier to find than cassette tapes these days.
The gesture, as indicated is greatly appreciated. Right now I'm feeling out prices, availability, etc, and trying to wait for stuff in as best condition as I can find---there's no support around here for electronic repairs.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -
The belts are available, and while they are a PITA to replace, they are doable.
Does not matter to me either way, it is just sitting in the closet collecting dust.Setup:

Cassette players have belts? If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

That is one reason "direct drive" became a feature. If you have to power two hubs and at least one capstan from one motor, you need belts. -
There is also a pair of HPM-40's over on www.audiokarma.org. He only wants $60 obo for them. He says he does not want to ship, but you never know....Setup:

Ok, thanks for the heads up. Looking back, I think I actually had HPM-500's (just the newer version of the 40). Saw 3 sets of those on ebay today...Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

Note : Not a better feature though. F direct drive, beit Turntables, Cassette Decks, Reel to Reel, or even CD Players for that matter. (granted belt drive cdps are expensive, and hard to find)
Direct coupled motors = vibration of the media. Vibration = bad.
Cheers,
