    For that price I'd recommend the Panasonic S77. Top notch, non nonsense budget player.

    in that price range, you're not benefitting anything. Either spend $300 for a nice denon or live with what you have.

    Before you rush out the door to buy a new player:

    - What is the nature of your problem?
    - What type of monitor do you have?
    - Do you have a calibration disc?
    - Has the monitor ever been manually adjusted or calibrated?

    By providing some details, the forum may be able to give you better direction.

    With in the next few weeks I'll be upgrading my Panasonic projector to the Sanyo Z3 which is a hi-def projector and has DVI / HDMI inputs. I'll need to upgrade my dvd player as well.

    Anyone have one of these newer dvd players with DVI / HDMI outputs and are using them?
    If...

    is there really going to be alot of upside to using HDMI/DVI from the DVD player? i would guess that most mid-level DVD players have a pretty good de-interlacing chip in them, not sure how good the one in the Sanyo is. is it easier to do scaling on the digital image than the analog?

    LCD displays can be grainy, its the nature of the beast. A new player may not help you.

    The best thing I can recommend is to find a store that will let you borrow a Denon DVD player so you can see if a quality player will help.

    Try to find a DVE, Avia or S&V calibration disk. A lot of people have graininess because their contrast is set too high, or their TV is still in "torch mode" from the factory.

    I second Steve's recommendation for the Panasonic S77. There is very little to fault about that player for the money. Its video output can stand up to all of the the most expensive Denon units (But you definetly won't get the high quality audio section with the Panny).

    Edit: I just noticed what TV you are using. You will definetly see an improvement if you go with a good quality upconverting unit like the Panny S77. Fixed pixel (LCD/DLP/LCOS) TVs look noticabley better with a good upconverting player, especially the cheaper ones (Proscan) that don't have the best built in scalers.

    had the same problem with my LCD rptv with the grainy picture, the avia disk help some by dimming down the picture ,that takes a little getting use to but you will, Also ,I have a Samsung hd 931 (w/DVI) and an Onkyo 702 dvd changer (w/componet )and I must say that the samsung with dvi hook up dose have a smoother picture, but I think I would wait on the newer dvd players if I were you

    Graininess can usually be attributed to too high contrast setting. Most people run their TV's way too HOT in the contrast/color department for my taste. Also check that your "sharpness" is set to 0. Modern televisions don't need the sharpness set, it only adds grain to the picture. My Panasonic 36" CRT is set like this: (Scale is 0 to 62)

    Color=8
    Contrast/Picture=40
    Brightness=42
    Tint=31
    Sharpness=0

    does anyone know bb return policy? i still want to try the hdmi dvd player to see if theres any video quality improovment. if i dont like it obviously i would like to return it.

    p.s. another reason i like that dvd player is because it reads divx movies and a multitude of my friends like to download movies and tv shows

    It used to be 30 days as long as you have all the original packaging and parts, but I'd check to make sure. I thought I read that they were getting more picky about returns, so that may have changed.

    I agree with Panny S77 recos. I have it connected with HDMI (Blue Jeans Cable) to my Panny AE700U LCD projector. In my system, this produces the smoothest and most noise free picture I have been able to achieve.

    When are HD-DVDs (and I'm guessing HD DVD players) supposedly coming out? I bought a Samsung HD-850 player impulsively after getting a great deal on a Samsung HPR 4252 Plasma TV. Picture is good in component, but seems very grainy, macroblocking, clayface using HDMI. Not sure if it's set up wrong, my DVDs are of poor quality, or Plasma's just don't look great in using HDMI. . . but HD TV looks great on it.

    If you had $200 to spend today on a DVD player, what would you get? I can live with what I have for a few more months as Component looks great, but if I find something I like better, I can hook up the HD850 in the bedroom with component or HDMI/DVD.

    Thanks!

    Some dvd players like the Toshiba have their output defaulted for component which is analog despite using the hdmi connection. It can be set to 'rgb (digital)' via video settings.
