I second the question. I've heard of digital media, digital sources, digital media players, digital cables, etc. But what are digital speakers?

The only way it could be digital is if it had the means to convert a digital signal into an analog signal and amplify it so as to push the speakers, since I assume a digital signal couldn't push the speakers. So, that'd make it an all-in-one, right?

    Thats quite a bit different.

Unless digital speakers are just ANALOG speakers with DIGITAL amps... ???

In audio digital is a word that gets used way too often. Not only is used too often, but more times than not it's used incorrectly and completely out of context.

A method of storing, processing and transmitting information through the use of distinct electronic or optical pulses that represent the binary digits 0 and 1. Digital transmission and switching technologies employ a sequence of discrete, distinct pulses to represent information, as opposed to the continuously variable analog signal

Representation of quantities in discrete (quantized) units. A digital system is one in which the information is contained and manipulated as a series of discrete numbers, as opposed to an analog system, in which the information is represented as a continuous trace or curve of the quantity constituting the signal.

Two definitions of the word digital. A speaker cannot reproduce a pure digital signal. It has to be converted to analog PERIOD. Our ears don't interpret digital impulses...they respond to the analog wave form. An analog wave form can be represented/reproduced using digital techniques, but it always need to be converted to analog as the final output.

"Appreciation of audio is a completely subjective human experience. Measurements can provide a measure of insight, but are no substitute for human judgment. Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. Differentiation by numbers is for those who do not".--Nelson Pass Pass Labs XA25 | EE Avant Pre | EE Mini Max Supreme DAC | MIT Shotgun S1 | Pangea AC14SE MKII | Legend L600 | BlueSound Node 3 - Tubes add soul!

powered speakers are far from being "digital."

Maybe we should be a bit more technical... there are no such thing as "digital transducers". If you use the term speaker meaning the whole system enclosure, then there's a possibility the speaker might be digital. The Meridians above are an example... there's the Polk IP speakers with a DSP in them...
