rm 6800 problems

Hi. New to the forum. Have a Polk rm6800 sub that I'v attached to my receiver using the speaker wire inputs.

The hum that I get is much louder than the hums most people have described on this forum as far as I can tell. Yes, I've disconnected it from EVERYTHING and attempted to isolate if its a ground loop problem. I've even tested it in another area of the house without any inputs; the hum is present regardless.

What's more, it causes severe distortion oif the volume is turned up much past a whisper. I ran a signal from the speaker wire directly to the cone and there was no distortion at all, thus eliminating that as the problem. If it is a damaged transformer, how would I go about getting a replacement.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have.

The Polk guys think it might be a defective amp. I'm now in Australia for the next 18 months making the possibilty of bringing it back to the states for repair a little less likely. Anyone know how I might purchase a replacement amp?
