Man, what a BEATING.

At the behest of doing some minor surgery on the Amazings (one of the bases appeared to be unstable so I had to re-drill the bases) which required me to move them to a more conducive location.....I decided to swap around the rigs. Moving 120lb plus speakers by yourself with no dolly CAREFULLY through the house is no small task.

The Amazings now are in the living room with Sunfire tube pre/Silver 9t's and the SDA 2.3tl's are in the cave with the CJ PV7/MV-75A1.

Why didn't I do this a LOOOONG time ago.....both rigs are MUCH improved. Moved the speakers and associated gear this morning and have been listening to each rig all day long.

As I said, life is suck but now life is GREAT.

(pics to follow, for some reason the Kodak easyshare program has taken a **** and I'm too beat to dick with it.)

The 2.3's should sound much better (fuller) in the cave. Your living room was TOO large for the bass to 'load up'.

Good on ya Troy. Ima roll tubes in the Melos, dig on the arrays for a few, and do a couple tugs.

    Cheers,

    Wasn't TOO bad...

    Russ,

What's the spacing that you have on your SRS's from the side walls and in between them??

Half the middle space = the side spacing.

48" between, 22" to side walls. You need to put that media shelf somewhere else maybe. If you are worried (or hear) side reflections, easy fix is to remove the grilles, and place them on the sides starting within a foot of the front plane of the speakers.

    Cheers,
    Russ

Been spending the last couple of days effing with the setup of the speakers...

It's cool because it's like two entirely different rigs that I *think* sound better than either did previously.

I think the SDA's in a more intimate setting is pure magic. The bass REALLY loads up in a small room. Plus, mating the CJ PV7 with the MV-75A1 just WORKS. In spades.

Out in the living room, I've been messing with the Amazings. Getting them out into the room a ways is a big help. Without damping the rear wall; the bass was to bloated. I'm still blown away at how musical they are and the just wall of sound they produce. They don't seemto play as loud as they really do, if that makes any sense. I've still got a bit of adjusting to do as the image isn't quite what it should be but we are close.

    Fun, fun, fun...

There are two places that CJ will EVER be. Troy's house is one. Your house ISN'T the other.

You know you have it bad when you keep a tape measure in your listening room. I keep mine very close at hand.................just finished tweaking my placement since getting my first SACD disc today. Very cool amount of separation and the soundstage of this disc is simply huge! Al Jarreau "All I Got". Every little tweak can make a ton of difference with big, full range speakers!!!

    Ok, how geek is this?

I've spent the good portion of the afternoon trying to address the issue of the back wave from the Amazings. I'm a big believer that, unabated, an undamped rear wall with a dipole does more harm than good. Some will say that it helps throw a bigger soundstage, to which I tacitly agree but I think it can be unnaturally large. It also hinders a good image...and depending on your room, cause other issues. Anyhow, I digress...

Anyhow, all day, I've been trying different fabrics on to cover the rear of the ribbons. How geek is THAT?? What did I end up with?? Plain masking tape...

    Troy,
You probably know this already but a 1/4" change in angle causes a huge sound shift. Have someone stand between them and push them forward and back until you get "THE SOUND" then set the angle to keep them there. Have you ever done this?

I'm with Russ....not sure why this didn't occur earlier. I bet that cave sounds more like your room back in the SDA glasses days....and that was pretty awesome.

The SDA cultists get so caught up in how big they can be, and room recommendations that they often forget that they're quite capable of smaller, imperfect room greatness. But what would we know I guess. If you haven't modified your 20 year old loudspeaker, you're a loser these days.
