Here's two vids of their prototype making machine at work. This thing was absolutely amazing to watch. Movies are both in Quicktime format, and around 4 mb each.

You can ignore ND13's comments... he was standing behind me :)

Um, for the slow-to-comprehend-because-we've-never-seen-one-in-person-before crowd, can you tell us what the heck we're looking at? I see a blue flashy thing moving around that is purported to be wicked!

    Indeed.

It is a laser, that shines down into some really expensive goo ($60,000/barrel?). Where it hits the goo, the goo solidifies. They use this machine to built prototype components such as speakers baskets for fit testing and such.

Here's a basket for a brand new momo subwoofer-

    100_0769l.jpg

So from there, they can sand it, finish it, and put it together w/ other pieces of the "pie" to make sure everything's going to work. It's really a COOL machine.

I think they said that sub basket was worth 5g's?

The machine essentially builds the component from the bottom up, one layer at a time.

the blue flashy thing is a laser which is computer numerical controlled and transforms the acrylic goo into three dimensional plastic prototype models of whatever the engineers decide the want to make. sounds pretty simple does it not ?

****- we got lucky, and they were producing a component at the time. That's why I was able to get video. They don't just run the machine "for fun" !!!

Stu the top engineer in the company next to Matt polk said the machine only builds the material up three thousands of a inch per pass. it would make for a very long day just to watch it complete a very small part

Wow. Quite amazing. Only .003" per pass?! That would take forever!

I saw that thing in action when I was there a few years back...

Something tells me it was no mistake it was making something when yall came. Two times in a row? ;)

As much as I would love to watch that video, my hate for Quicktime over-shadows the love. :D

Ill wait for the pictures! Glad to see everyone is having a good time!

The video is worth it. Unfortunately, my digicam only records .mov's. I do have some pics, but all you see is a dot of blue light. The rest of the pics are coming... unfortunately my gallery software isn't currently letting me add any new pictures, so it'll likely be Monday before any of mine are up.

I use media player classic . Plays almost everything.

Real Player is FAAAAR more evil than quicktime, to whoever said that. Quicktime is proprietary and annoying, but it's pretty easy to tell it to only install quicktime player, and it's VERY easy to uninstall. RealPlayer actually screws up your computer, installs TONS of third-party software no matter how many times you tell it not to, and doesn't completely uninstall, even with the uninstall program.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Real Player was created by SATAN himself, Quicktime was created by his henchman!

Real Player is like a freakin plague that takes over your freakin computer with ads, eating at your start up and just planting itself EVERYWHERE. It has NEVER been installed on this computer and never will get the chance.

Quicktime is just slow, annoying and unneeded.

I like WMP alot though ;)

Give me Quicktime over Real and WMP any day. Technologically superior and far less harmful in how it installs.

    Thanks for the video treat.

noel- right-click on the links and save target as. Put them on your desktop. If you have quicktime installed, you should be able to just double click on the file that you downloaded and it will open up. if not, you'll have to go to www.apple.com/quicktime to download it.

Just found some alternatives to Real and Quicktime, so I dug up this thread if anyone's interested.

    Quicktime Alternative

    RealPlayer Alternative

Lets you play Quicktime and Real content without having the players installed, basically.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.
