can you hear any difference between digital and analog ? most stores around here don't even carry players with a 5.1 analog out so I've never heard for my selfCasey

Hey Miller- ok now i'm ready to answer the question seriously- With the 5.1 analog outs you are using the DVD or SACD player's internal D/A converters & decoding while bypassing the ones in your receiver. If you use the digital out- you're bypassing the d/a converters & decoding abilities in your player and using the ones in your receiver.
You use either of the two depending on how good your converters are in both your disc player and your processor/receiver/pre-amp/whatever.
For example- for DVD viewing- I use the digital out because the receiver can almost always decode better than the dvd player (DPL IIx, DTS-ES, etc.)
For Cd listening- it depends on how well your CD players put together. My Cd player has got nice d/a converters- up to par or maybe even better than the ones in my receiver- so therefore I use the analog out.
For SACD or DVD-Audio- you don't have a choice in the manner 99% of the time. You have to use the analog outs.
Hope this helps somewhat. -

I use 5 ch analog for DVD and SACD/DVD-A from my Denon 2900. Seems to present a bit more fullness of sound than using digital out to the HK.Dodd Audio ELP [ Tubes ] // Harman Kardon AVR330 // Parasound HCA-1203A // Denon DVD-2900
