Question regarding speaker & receiver connections

Hello-

I finally got my Polk speakers connected over the weekend. With the help of some great people on this forum (after my poor start :( ) I ended up with the following:

Mains: Polk RTi10
Center: Polk CSi5
Surrounds: Polk FXi3
Subwoofer: SBS PB12-ISD
Receiver: Yamaha RX-V2500

I ran some 14G wire to the surround speakers, and ran through the "automated" set up on the Yamaha. (It sends a tone to each of the speakers, and sets the size, distance, etc. A pretty decent starting point)

I got everything all hooked up, and began to use it to watch football on Sunday. I popped in a DVD to check out the new sub, and about 5 minutes in to Terminator II, the receiver shut itself off.

I powered it back on, and on the display, it said to check the speaker wiring? I checked the instruction manual, and it said that there might be a short in one of the speakers. I double checked the wiring, and didn't find anything out of the norm, so I tried to run the set up again. It got about half way through, and the receiver turned it self off again, with the same message on the screen when I powered it back on.

I decided to take an ohm meter to the Polks to see if I could figure out what was going on. I found out that they read around 4.5 ohms for all speakers. I had an old pair of Sonys around, and they read 7 ohms. The Sonys were labeled as 8 ohm speakers. I checked the owners manual for the Polks, and they are listed as 8 ohm compatible speakers?

I decided to switch the Yamaha to 6 ohms (you can set the speaker impedance at either 8 ohm or 6 ohm) to see if that would help. I was able to complete the speaker set up, and upon testing the DVD, it seemed to play through okay.

Does anyone have any idea on what I could do to continue troubleshooting? Is the receiver defective? Are the speakers bad?

Thanks for the help, and sorry about the length of this message.
David

Your Polks are nominally rated as 8 ohm speakers, however, this resistance fluctuates. Seems the Yammie cant handle the lower end without shutting off. Leave it at the six ohm setting for now, see if it heats up or if shuts down during loud passages or increased volumes. If it is under warranty I would return it as it should be able to handle your RTi series Polks.

    reeltrouble1-

Thanks for the reply. I kind of figured that the receiver could handle the Polks. The receiver is still under warranty, so I'll give Yamaha a try, and see what they say.

    Thank again.

    Update:

I got an e-mail from Yamaha Technical Support. They basically said to set the receiver at 6 ohms, and see what happens. If it shuts down again (protection circuit), then I should send it in for warranty repair.

I was looking at the AVS Forum, and noticed that another user had a similar problem. From the information that I have read, it appears that the receiver may be having trouble driving the speakers, since they are a 4 ohm load. The solution appears to be to add external amplification....the Wife's gonna love that one!
