More LP's from GoodWill!!!

I stopped in at the local Good Will shop to see if they had any new LP's yesterday. I cleaned them out several weeks ago but they just got new stock in.

58 NM LP's were found. Great selection. Obviously an audiophiles collection. All absolutely perfect!

So I go up to pay for them, feeling a little like I was stealing something, and they mark off an extra $5 because of some sale they were having. Total price: $40.42

Lets see, that is about the same price as one good SACD or maybe 3 CD's. I'm liking this vinyl stuff a lot!

I`m thinking of going vinyl,
but only after my latest obsession with headphones get paid for..

This hobby is exspensive....

unless you make killer scores at Goodwill like you have been..!

My GW only had some scratched up gospel this week. But they did have a K&E mahoganey slide rule in a leather case for 50 cents.

The local antique stores have some great selection too. Most of the sellers have very high prices, $3 to $15, so of course they don't sell many. Eventually they all go on sale because they are not moving. A few weeks ago I found one seller who marked all his high priced LP's down to $1 each to get rid of them. I took him up on the offer.

But seriously, the vinyl experience aint cheap. The upfront cost is very serious. Table, arm, cartridge, preamp, cleaning machine, brushes, cleaner, inserts and covers etc. Not to mention the ongoing need to buy more cleaner and stuff. So far it has been very enjoyable and rewarding though.

Edit: I always check out the GoodWills first though. Might as well help someone out at the same time I advance my collection.

That reminds me.....I went to the local pawn shop yesterday. Lot's of people in here seem to get a good deal now and again. Wow, how lame the pawn shop is here. Nothing but junkaroo. Some nice off brand/overseas assembled electric guitars that would be nice for me since I'm a beginner if I ever decide to play. But other than that lot's of abused Sony recievers a few old Sony, Yammy cassette decks and basically junky abused speakers. No vinyl whatsoever and used cd's for $6 each, WTF most of the cd's they couldn't have given away.

I think I'll stick to the Goodwill and Salvation army. My friend made a good point yesterday. He said most pawn shops are for druggies to get their next fix or to front stolen merchandise. What a bunch of crap merchandise.

hey chuck!
i'm sending off my lp's to you tomorrow....the list grew to 78! have fun! i'm sure with all those top-flight toys, the transfer from lp to cd will be seamless!

Heiney9 - If you get an opportunity, hit the pawn shops in West Dundee! I stop every couple of weeks on my way home from work. They seem to get a lot better stuff all around then I have seen in the Rockford pawn shops.

Thanks that's good advice. Have you been to Bobby's here in town? Not a nice neighborhood even during the day. That's the only one I went to, it's the most well known. Doubt I'll go back there again, not worth it. Anything good in the Belvidere area? Was it you who mentioned over the weekend you went to the flea market? If it was you, was it the local one off Alpine near Sandy Hollow?

Heiney9 - it was the one on Alpine across from Sundstrand, in what looks like an old lumber yard building. It has kind of been dying out, although I still find some interesting stuff there once in a while. There is a guy that runs a couple of booths that I have picked up several pretty decent pairs of Polk monitors, Advents, and B&O speakers from. I picked up the Monitor 5b's from them this weekend. I think they thought they had a good pair of speakers until they wouldn't make sound and I pointed out that the thuds from the inside were the driver magnets! I told them as long as they didn't shake them anymore and ruin the cross-overs, I would take them off their hands for $5. I've picked up a couple of decent older Marantz receivers from him also. I picked up a nice set of Boston A100's that just needed some TLC and the woofers refoamed and a nice Yamaha CR-820 receiver from him not too long ago, under $70 out the door. With a little work it made a very nice sounding system for a friend of mine. The flea markets at the Lake county fairgrounds also tend to get some decent mid-fi and better gear included in them. Not much in Belvidere, unless you like hispanic music played via a car audio system at about 105db with the doors and trunk open!!!!!!
