Okay, I've Watched This Movie Many Times. Usually On Cable. I Finally Bought The Dvd Last Month, The Special Edition, Re-released In 2005. Almost The Entire Movie Seems To Be Squeezed Vertically, Meaning Everyone Looks Skinny And Tall And Cars Look Stubby. It's Not Too God Awful Bad To Suggest Improper Viewing Format As One Gets From Re-sizing With Their Television. I Watch Dvd's In Full-on Widescreen Exclusively Via My Oppo Up-converting Dvd Player. First And Foremost, It's Not My Tv Or Dvd Player. Just Wondering If This Movie Was Inteded To Be "squeezed" And I've Never Noticed It Before, Or Do I Have Some F'ed Up Disc? I Know You Fellow Polkers Own This Special Edition Or Regular Edition Dvd. Someone Tell Me If I Am Wrong. I Just Cannot Watch This Movie In This Manner. Gonna End Up A Beverage Coaster.

....not the new and improved version.
It's one of my all time favorites, and looks great on my widescreen tv.
So I'm thinking either you got a *ucked up disc, or a mislabled full screen version.

NO. IT'S DEFINATELY WIDESCREEN. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH PERHAPS AN EDITOR OR EVEN THE PRODUCER WANTED TO SQUEEZE SOME SERIOUS PANORAMIC INFORMATION SO AS NOT TO LEAVE ANYTHING OUT OF THE FIELD OF VIEW OR SOME ****. THING IS, I GOT ONE AT TARGET AND THEN EXCHANGED IT AT ANOTHER TARGET THINKING THERE MAY HAVE BEEN SOME BAD LOTS OF THESE MOVIES. MAY VERY WELL BE. I'VE SCOURED THE INTERNET LOOKING FOR OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS TO NO AVAIL. IT'S NOT OVERLY STRIKING, BUT EVEN A NOVICE WOULD ASK, "WHY DO PACINO AND DENIRO LOOK LIKE THEY HAVE SKINNY, LONG HEADS? MAYBE EVERY 2005 RELEASE IS SCREWY, YET NO ONE ELSE HAS MENTIONED IT. IT IS THERE. VERY MUCH SO. ENOUGH TO WARRANT **** SLAPPING WHOMEVER CAUSED THIS MISTAKE. I LOVE WATCHING MOVIES. I LOVE GREAT PICTURE QUALITY. AM WAITING FOR HDDVD. I AM RANTING ON. YUP, IT'S GONNA BE A COASTER AS TARGET WON'T RETURN MY DINERO (NOT DENIRO). WHOA, I GOTZ ME SOME Tetrahydrocannabinol IN ME. .........btw........if it had been a fullscreen dvd, and then i stretched it, all actors would be represented as wide, fatties vs long, skinnies.

I've noticed this too with this film. I also have the Special Edition DVD, and I had the original DVD release as well. I don't think it's an issue of improper formatting, just the way the film looks. It doesn't seem to be the case all the time, but in certain scenes, it is definitely noticable. Maybe they tried to fit 2.4:1 onto 2.35:1 which gives it a slightly stretched look. Who knows?

yeah, maybe all those times i've watched the movie previously, i just failed to notice this fact. of course, i have never watched the movie with any good gear, meaning i've only seen it in fullscreen on cruddy-**** analog cable. i haven't watched it for a few years then one day i decided to buy it. ('round the time i got my new polks and wanted to revisit the famous shootout scene once again.) now with all my gear i find myself critiqueing every single thing i watch or hear. damned higher-end electronics! got me some corona in my system as well............demiurge, i usually type in all capitals and the forum automatically "lower-cases" all letters besides the first of each word. maybe i should make it my trademark.....oops, forgot to do it this time 'round.

I know this is off-topic, but general internet etiquette dictates NOT typing in all caps - there's a reason the forum automatically lowercases everything for you. All Caps generally indicates screaming. Just capitalizing the first letter of every word is just... disorienting, and gives me a headache. If you don't like hitting shift, that's fine - p lenty of people type without any caps at all - stick to that. You'll get very few people to take you seriously if you type in all caps or any other wacky capitalization scheme.

Don't mean t his as a diss, just a public service announcement.

BIZILL, I have read on the AVS forum that this sometimes is an issue with the Oppo DVD player!

    Check this thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=482239

I was going to get the Oppo until I read that it wasn't a good match for my Mits WS-48315, it seems to be better suited for certain TVs.

no, it's not the oppo. i own many dvd's and all play perfectly. heat is the only movie that does this. i've heard of lip synch probs with my oppo and did not recognize it at first. but now i've begun to notice it. i'm sure there will be a firmware upgrade to combat this. for now i just hit stop, then play again and all is better.

    From IMDB :
Many viewers claim that Deniro and Pacino never (or hardly ever) actually share screen time during the film, despite the hype surrounding the films release as showcasing their first screen appearance. In most Pan and Scan versions of the film, and TV broadcasts, it does appear that during the "diner scene" the two never actually share the screen, but viewing the film in correct letterbox format, as the director intended, clearly shows the two actors sitting at the table, though only in wide shots.

Not only that, but there is a featurette on the new Special Edition which specifically dissects this scene, and shows how DeNiro and Pacino both had a lot of input on how the scene played out. They did several takes together, and the featurette even specifies which takes made into the final film. Whether or not they hate each other, I don't know, and couldn't care less, but as for the claim that they did not, in fact, share a scene, that's total rubbish.

.......either way, i've concluded that this must be the way the movie was either filmed or transferred. i don't recall ever noticing it until i bought the dvd. i think the only time i'll ever watch it anymore is only for the bank shootout scene.
