Surround speaker opinion
My current set up (5.1) has R50's as main, CSi3 as center and R15 as rears. I am purchaseing a new A/V receiver and I have a pair of RT7's laying around. So
my questions would be:
1) Should I use the RT7 as my "side" surround speakers ?
2) Replace my R50's with the RT7, move tthe R50 to the side?
3) Dump the R15, buy another pair of R50 and use the RT7 as rears?
4) Dump the whole plan and start over ($$$$)
Thanks

Welcome to the forum,
My vote would be to with option number 2. The RT7's are great sounding speakers and will probably sound better than the R50's in almost every category. Bass might be your only concern, but the RT's produce a lot of that as well, because of the large cabinet size. If you decide to go this route, look at finding an old CS275 to mate with your 7's. A CS300, CS400(i), or CS350 would also be good matches because they share the same trilaminate tweeter.
If the 7's don't work out, then just send them to me. I will be happy to put them to good use.
BTW, what receiver are you looking at getting?

Sorry I forget to mention that I have a cheap KLH E12DB subwoofer as well....
I am looking at a Denon 5803 and if that fails, probably will choose between a
Pio VSX-56TXi or Denon 3805 -
Save a little $$ on the receiver and get the 2805(although the 3805 is very nice). That should be plenty of power for the speakers you have. I set up a system recently that is using the 1905 for some RT7's and they sound really good.
Then, with the remaining money, get a respectable subwoofer. Try www.svsubwoofers.com for some killer subs. Even the smallest model will have better performance than most, not all, comparably priced subs.
Have fun upgrading.Tschüss

Ok..I got my new receiver and a new DVD player...
My system now consists of :
Pioneer Elite VSX-74TXVi
Pioneer Elite DV-59AVi
Polk RT7 - main (pair)
Polk CSi3 -center
Polk R50 - Surround (pair)
Polk R15 - Surround (pair)
KLH 12EB Sub-woofer (single)
I haven't dialed in the system to much yet and I will be moving soon so I am not going to spend much time setting it up. However teh first pass (w/MCACC) was not only fast but pretty decent. My main concern is what could be considered a "hodge-podge" speaker selections or mismatches. Any opinions are additions, subtractions or changes
that may be beneficial? Is the R50 a waste of speaker for the Surrround speakers ?? Any opinions on how the RT7's can co-exist with the the lower quality R15's?
Enquiring minds want to know. but I want to spend..... -
One last thing I would recommend would be to go to radio shack and get the analog spl meter and pick up something like the Avia Guide to Home Theater, Sound and Vision's AV tune-up disc(don't remember the name but it is similar to AVIA). Only your ears can tell you if you like the sound coming from the speakers. I like the setup as is, but you might like it different if you switch things around.Tschüss

Are the R15's as "surround back"? Not a lot of material has sound going to those channels..that can be a reason you don't hear them too much...
