And counting.....I cannot say it has been easy, but I've been able to stay away from smoking fo the first time since I started some 30 years ago.....
At this point, I think I might actually get through it....and IT FEELS GOOD!!!!!
Any one out there that has been thinking about quitting....GO FOR IT; let me tell you, if I can do it, anyone can....was smoking close to 2 packs/day, and after only a few days without it, everything SMELLS better, I got rid of that morning cough...(AMAZING>>>ONLY 4 DAYS>>>>>), and I feel so good about myself !!!!!
I truly think this is the best I can do for my children....
Oh, and what I am doing is chewing that nicotine gum from Wallgreens........

Keep it up HT. Anytime you get that craving come look at this post. Congrats man. Nothing in life makes me more happy than to see someone give up smoking. My grandmother died from lung cancer. I am not one of those people that will go up to strangers and tell them they should quit. But once someone says they are going to quit, I go out of my way to try and help them anyway I can. If I can do anything for you, let me know.Setup:

I smoked 3 packs a day. I was one of those that would light up and then see one burning in the ashtray. I never tried to stop because I LIKED to smoke. I started in high school and was a very light smoker until college. I smoked for over 20 years. I got a really bad case of bronchitis and it was really painfull to smoke. Stopped on a Sunday, lit one up on the following Thursday when I was feeling better. It tasted like crap. Put it out and I have not taken so much as a drag on a cigarette since then. That was 15 years ago. As I understand it takes about 2 weeks for the PHYSICAL cravings to stop. After that it is the PSYCHOLOGICAL cravings that take the most time to get over (several months).
YOU CAN DO IT! it is one of the best and most important things I have ever done. Hang in there."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

Thanks for the support..and as far as cravings, physical get covered by gum, and psychological...well, these are the worst if you ask me, so I am really trying to keep away from things that would suggest lighting up.....I already have my weekend planned around non-smokers....this should help_________________________________________________

What I found difficult was going out and having a drink. And the hand to mouth motion. But As Shack, it was xmas eve my wife and I had just bouhg t anew pack having drinks, I started to gag. ended the night the next morning I threw out the cigarettes and we have not touched since. Now I smoke cigars once in a while. When I feel it's right.
Hang in there!! -

GO HT GO!!!!! YOU CAN DO IT! GO!!!!!!
You want more proof your doing the right thing? Go up a couple of flights of stairs and see how much easier it is since your lungs are finally clearing out.
When you get a craving, go for a walk, or run up & down some stairs. You'll be too tired to light up.

dholmes,
Where in KY do you live???? If you are close to Ohio, try crossing the river every time you need to buy cigarretes... 50% more expensive up here.... this for sure will add some incentive for quitting...
Now seriously, as everyone else, I like (should say liked..) smoking, probably the reason I never tried before... but there are SO MANY good reasons for quitting....
-you'll save money...on cigarretes, insurance premiums, dentist, things you won't burn...
-you'll feel better..
-your family will appreciate it..
-so many others..._________________________________________________

Congrats HT. I smoked for a couple of years (nowhere near what you did) but even then it was tough to quit, but it got easier and easier as the time apssed and you realize how good you feel.
Pyschological addiction will always bug you, but just keep your eye on the goal and you can get past it. Like you said, just think of your kids.
Good luck man.If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
And you won't stink (as much )! Always a bonus...

Cold turkey is the only way to go. It's uncomfortable for the first 4-5 days, but after that it's all mental. I quit 1 year ago TODAY!!! I smoked Camel Light Wides for as long as they have been out on the market and before that Camel Filters  . 23 years at about 1 pack a day on average. Some days more some less, but when I was a steady drinker I could easily smoke 2 packs in one night of drinking with the pals .
One thing I don't do, that alot of ex-smokers do, is persecute the people that still do smoke. I hate that!!!!
Anyway, keep it up. You're almost past the physical issues, except for the weight gain that is.
YEEHAA!!!! one year today and I don't miss it at all. Well, sometimes after a meal, but that's rare."SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,

Hmm... maybe I need to take up smoking so that I can quit and gain weight!
Nah, just kidding. Congrats on not smoking. I got slightly hooked on second hand smoke when working for a chainsmoker once in my early teens. Worked in a shop for her for 2 years, and there was pretty much always a lit cig somewhere around. I've never actually taken a drag on one, though, so I guess that ends my associative experience .
Congrats again...Ludicrous gibs! -
