Receiver Problems

Hello everyone!
Has anyone who owns a Sony ES receiver ever experienced a problem with an error message appearing in the display saying: PROTECTOR--POWER OFF?
Mine has recently started doing this. Just prior to doing this, all channels go dead except for the sub. After I power down, wait a couple of minutes, and then bring it back up, it seems fine. However, it still keeps happening and I would like to get to the root of the problem and if I have to look into spending a lot of money to remedy it. BTW, I have a Sony STR-DA4ES if that's of any interest to anyone.
Thanx to all who reply!

I don't have the ES receiver but it sounds like it could be the thermal protection shutting the receiver off. The reason why I say this is that you said it will work again if you power down for a few minutes and power back on. This could be enough time for the amps to cool off below the thermal cut-off....

All channels go dead except the sub because the sub has it's own amp...

Also did you recently change speakers??

Just trying to cover the basics..

The most common reason for protection messages is a short in the speaker wires, ie positive and negative touching. If you rewired or moved the receiver or speakers recently, it is probably what is happening. It may not turn off right away if it is a rear channel that doesn't have much signal going to it. The easy way to test it out is to run your receiver's test tones. When the test tone hits the offending speaker wire, the receiver will go into protect mode. Then you know which wire to check. It is usually a stray wire on the receiver side, but could be at the speaker end or if the wire has become frayed along its length (pets or kids do this ;)).

I don't think it's a thermal problem. I know I don't power down long enough to warrant any significant cooling, but...who knows? I just watched a two hour long movie and I'm listening to CD's right now and it has yet to do it again.

As far as a short goes, nope, I don't think it could be that either. I use bananna plugs on both the receiver and speaker ends, and all the wiring is run out of harms way from kids, pets, and the like. I think if it is thermal related, I may need to concider getting a cooling fan. I have had housed in this enclosure for several months now and it seems that if it were a thermal problem that it would have presented itself sooner...I guess. BTW, the measurements of its enclosure are 23"W X 9"H X 23 1/4"D. That leaves 2 1/2" on top and 3 1/2" on each side. I figured that to be plenty, but I could be wrong here. Thanx for the feedback y'all!
