Here's a blurb from the article if you don't want to sign up for the site:
"McIntosh is unveiling the highest priced speakers it has ever made and one of the highest priced consumer speakers in audio history. And its meant to be driven by the companys highest power amp.
TheXRT2K line-array speaker ships in September at $40,000 each, not $40,000 per pair. Each three-way, tri-wire-capable speaker contains a column of six 12-inch aluminum-cone woofers in a shared enclosure. A companion midrange/tweeter column, also in its own enclosure, features four 2-inch inverted-dome midrange drivers and 40 0.75-inch titanium-dome tweeters.
The tall line-array speakers are designed to be very delicate and accurate as well as having the dynamic range that is required to recreate the sound pressure level of reality, said product manager Ron Cornelius. Their dynamic range of more than 130dB requires massive power handling capacity and two of the companys $30,000 2,000-watt mono MC2K amplifiers, Cornelius said. These amplifiers have the highest output of any McIntosh amps, with the lowest distortion and best signal to noise ratio, he said. Theyre due this month."

Anyone with that type of dough probably doesn't have to worry about that.
Obviously Mc is targeting a very small audience. If nothing else, they're a marketing statement. "Well if you can't mortgage your house for those, you can buy this setup which is a small fraction of the price and sounds pretty darn good"Brian Knauss

Can you say ridiculous?
Looks like a bit much. At some point it just becomes TOO MUCH.
I'm sure they'll be amazing, but I agree the money could be better spent elsewhere, while still having plenty of money for an awesome two-channel system that doesn't cost as much as a house (in some states, anyway).Current System:

Vienna Acoustics Beethoven Concert Grand (Rosewood)-Mains (with Audioquest Mont Blanc cables)
CSi5-Center (for sale**)
FXi3-surrounds (for sale**)

Hey, if you can afford it, WTF. I'm sure the target market already has what everyone here is describing.
Not to mention the $30K source, you'll probably want to build a $25K room to hear them in... -
I'd cover the outside of my house in Plasma's. I'd never have to paint again, just change the DVD. . . . ummmm Red. Red is good.-Ignorance is strength -

Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
