Polk srs 2.3 vs 1.2

I've been an SDA lover for some time now being a few of my friends have been long time owners of the legendary SRS 1.2. My question is will there be much of a difference between their 1.2's and the 2.3's I'm looking at purchasing. Also what is that odd looking 6-1/2 speaker on these 2.3 non TL's and what is the exact difference between a 2.3 and a 2.3tl. I'd appreciate any and all help.
