It's all good, because I'm accustomed to not even 56k at home. And the cable is supposed to be twice as fast as the DSL I was looking into."SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,

You are going to have some fun when you get it all up and running.

You are getting a good deal @ $30 a month with Insight. I use Insight and that offer came around *after* I got mine up and running. My intial offer was $19.95 for the 1st three months. Now I pay $44.95 a month and was none too happy when the $30 offer came out. I tried to switch but since I have no other choice in my area for cable.....they politely told me it was not possible to get that deal
What modem are you using? I originally bought the one from Insight but could never get to intialize after the install guys left. It was a top line RCA DCM 425. I ended up getting the Motorola SB5100 which has worked out much better.
Just curious

Comcast speeds vary. It's a good thing it doesn't go lower than 2.0. But that's kind of pathetic considering most people in my area aren't even using Comcast. Otherwise the server itself is awesome.
-
Nevermind. I changed my mind. I think Comcast is cool , but they took forever to activate our service . Tell me whatcha think of my non-sense. By the way, each different service usually has their own rules for new service. Comcast, so far will give you a month free, but you have to wait about two weeks of that time. that's the best I've heard them do.

I myself havn't really noticed a whole lot of difference between xp pro on my computer and xp home on the family computer other than being able to setup a remote desktop connection. My computer is a little faster despite the specs that show it is much slower and a little more stable but I don't know if that has anything do do with win xp. I don't really do much networking or anything fancy but I went pro because it was free...

Just got the modem and it's the Motorola SB5100. It was alot cheaper to buy it from Insight than to buy it from Wal Mart . Got it, nib, for $39, WM sells it for $59, unless it has gone down recently. Now to get the router, today, so i can get online tonight . It seems that the most suggested router is the Linksys, so I guess that I'll go that route."SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,

XP home is fine for home users. XP pro adds some other networking options that Home doesn't have, such as joining a domain. Most home users don't have to worry about joining a domain!
Also, another good speed test site is www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/Ludicrous gibs! -

So they are back to selling the Motorola again . When I signed up in January of this year my impression was I should have gotten the Motorola but they gave me the RCA instead also $39. So I spent $89 on the Motorola at BB. Anyway you look at it you are getting the better deal now, 9 months later. The RCA seems to have gotten good reviews but I never got it to work properly. The Motorola should be a very good unit.

Okay, it's off to Wal Mart to pick up the router, then to the hacienda to do the install. Wish me luck
Hopefully, everything will just fall together and I'll be back online in a couple of hours on the new home PC"SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,

Always remember, luck is where preparation meets opportunity. Blind luck is getting it to work without knowing how you did it.
You don't have to install the cable companies software for that stuff to work either. All they need is the MAC address of the modem. Once you get up and running, change the password on the router. The default password will most likely be 'admin' on the Linksys.Salk SoundScape 8's * Audio Research Reference 3 * Bottlehead Eros Phono * Park's Audio Budgie SUT * Krell KSA-250 * Harmonic Technology Pro 9+ * Signature Series Sonore Music Server w/Deux PS * Roon * Gustard R26 DAC / Singxer SU-6 DDC * Heavy Plinth Lenco L75 Idler Drive * AA MG-1 Linear Air Bearing Arm * AT33PTG/II & Denon 103R * Richard Gray 600S * NHT B-12d subs * GIK Acoustic Treatments * Sennheiser HD650 * -
