<---nOOb ?s regarding HT Setup

So this weekend I tried to setup my 2 R50s and my 2 R30s with my new HK235.

I don't have a cable box, just a cable wire I get my channels from. I run that into the TV and run my dvd player and tv to my HK235. Well, the receiver keeps going into PROTECT mode saying I have a short somewhere in my AR 16 gauge wire. I unhook all of the wires, and the receiver is still in this protect mode and the HK customer service rep tells me there is a short in the receiver and to send it back to J&R immediately.

Anyway, I am totally stumped as to what needs to hook up into where with my DVD player and my tv. Do I send audio feeds from the TV and the DVD player to the receiver? I could get the DVD player to play through all 4 speakers but I couldn't get anything out of the tv...anybody want to make me any suggestions? Would using the S-video connection make my life easier?

Thanks in advance. THe first football game is this weekend and I wanted to have this hooked up ASAP. J&R sent me out another receiver 2-day shipping so any help would be appreciated.

I tried following the examples in the receiver package and in my Mitsubishi owner's manual but they weren't much help.

Video cables do not transmit audio signals, so in your case, you have to use separate cables for both...

To get the dvd player to play though the receiver, you have to hook up separate cables for audio/video and then you have to use the monitor out to get the video signal to pass to the tv:

Video: hook whatever video cable you are using from the dvd player to the dvd vid in on the receiver, then take another video cable, hook one end to the monitor out section (match type of cable you are using, i.e composite and s-video each have a monitor out) on the recevier and the other to the video in jacks on the tv.

Audio:for the sound, you can just hook the audio cables up to your receiver and play the sound through the receiver.

You can also hook the dvd player directly to the tv if you like. You will also need two cables, one for video, another for sound...

What type of audio out does your TV have. Analog only? The red and white looking plugs. Or Digital, maybe a black looking strange shaped connector emitting a red laser light? Or maybe an orange looking plug type? Check your owners manual it should talk about this.
