Adware/toolbar Search Engines

I have to vent...

What is it with these browsers, messengers, regular programs installing all this BS adware, toolbar search engines, and all this...

And they go about it in such a way that most people would never notice...

For instance, I was updating Yahoo messenger...

The "Typical Install" included a Toolbar, Something called "Yahoo Extras" and a Pop Up Blocker that I do not need. They dont even SHOW YOU THIS until you click "Custom Install!!" The only options they show you out-right is "Set Yahoo as my homepage" and "Put shortcut, blah blah blah" - so basically I took a 20 MB update and sized it down to 9 MB. WHY DO COMPANIES FEEL THE NEED TO DO THIS??

Another example is MSN - who wants a MSN Search bar? Hotbar? Why would you want Hotbar? Not to mention AOL, AOL and AIM are like plagues... they go all over the machine with links to get AOL and update and buy and toolbars and AHHHH!...

I'm getting so tired of this SPAM... it shouldnt be nessicary!!!

That's why you never do the typical installations... They're not really hiding it that deep...

What gets me even more is programs that install all of that crap even after you specifically tell it NOT to.
    Ludicrous gibs!

Yeah, I will have to start checking a bit more thoroughly - only reason I even checked it though was because Yahoo has tried this on me on the install and every update after it. I could understand the install (even though that is still rediculous) - but every update? Heck 11 MB of the Update was stuff that is basically spam!

And yep, I know what your talking about on that as well... I just hate spam... any kind, especially stuff that installs directly on the machine!

I hate it when it gets on my machine (which is none too often...), but on other people's machines? Well, that makes me money!

On my internet machine, I have XP Pro, security, and ISP client. That's all. no tool bars, no free programs and best of all no crapola or adware.

I look into nearly everything I install anymore. I'll read what other people say about it to make sure it doesn't install any "extras." I use GAIM, despite it's occasional bugginess, because it's nothing but an IM client (and replaces AIM, Yahoo, MSN, etc). I use "Media Player Classic" rather than Windows Media, Quicktime, or, God forbid, REALPlayer.

Anything that claims to be "free" is usually riddled with this crap. Look at all the alternatives. Ask around before you install. Don't tolerate that crap.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

I used GAIM for a long time but I was still having to use other messengers due to certain things. Mainly file sharing, as I send alot of pics/songs/CDs/programs over messenger. (shhh)

Well, I purchase all the software (Microsoft Office, XP, Norton Internet Security, Antivirus, Antispam...) and I never, NEVER get all that crap. Scan all inbound mail, system scan once a week and ALL typical maintenance on a regualr basis. Not one virus in 20 years as a PC user.
