This 5 year old Gateway CRT monitor is going bad and it needs replaced very, very soon....(like maybe this week). I've been thinking about an LCD 19"-20" monitor and I'm trying not to go over $600.00..........any comments about the LCD monitors, are they any good? they sure are compact and would save some space.

NEC makes a nice lcd
And oh yeah, the Viewsonics and LGs are very nice ones also. You can probably get close to a 23" widescreen for $600. Some of the monitors that are used for tv are pc compatible also and have HD capabilities to boot."SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,

I'm buying used 19 to 21 inch CRTs when I can find them. IMO they are more reliable and have a better picture. Found several for <$15 apiece.>

Me too. I really like my refurbished CRT Viewsonic 22" P220f. I paid $200 (or something like that my memory is so so LOL) one year ago at my local Fry's. It's huge, heavy and make a lot of heat though.
CRT still have the best PQ IMHO.

I just ordered a 20" Samsung LCD for $700.00. There are many other very nice brands out there and maybe next time it will be a widescreen.

I switched from a 17' CRT to a 19' Samsung LCD and love it.The LCD's dont strain your eyes like a CRT and do not give off radiation so you will notice a big difference when switch.I bought mine from Best Buy for around $350 or so...Old School stuff

When I bought my computer I went with a low budget so I got myself a Samsung SyncMaster 515v (15" lcd). I sit farily close so the 15 isn't too bad. I had originally planned on getting a crt but now that I have an lcd I am very happy with having such a thin monitor. LCD's also don't hork out the heat like a crt will so if that is an issue they're definatly worth it.

Yessss.....
And it has a resolution of 1920x1200.... ahhh, sweet sweet desktop space! This is the reason why I didnt go for them LCD TV's with screen resolutions of only 1280x768.... meaning a 23" lcd tv doesnt have any more desktop area than a regular 17" widescreen PC lcd.
But, yes... it did cost a pretty penny. $1200 retail at Dell but with 3 coupons that I "illegally" stacked through a nice nice nice dell phone rep, I was able to walk out with the 2405 for only $650.Magico M2, JL113v2x2, EMM, ARC Ref 10 Line, ARC Ref 10 Phono, VPIx2, Lyra Etna, Airtight Opus1, Boulder, AQ Wel&Wild, SRA Scuttle Rack, BlueSound+LPS, Thorens 124DD+124SPU, Sennheiser, Metaxas R2R -
I use this 19 LCD.

Pat,
Do you game at all? That would make a difference on what type of monitor I would suggest. In general, I would go for a 17" or 19" LCD, but make sure it is an MVA type panel (versus TN Film) unless you game, then consider a TN film due to faster response. Remember that a 17" LCD is about the same actual screen size as a 19" CRT monitor and a 19" LCD is more like a 21" CRT!
Here is a good location for reviews of monitors and discussion of the relavant technology: http://graphics.tomshardware.com/display/index.html
My current favorite is the Viewsonic VP191b. It is a 19" LCD MVA panel type with one of the fastest response time of any panel. Its pretty sweet.
Oh, yeah, my monitors: 1 system with a Viewsonic P95f+ and another with a Samsung Syncmaster 950p (both 19" CRTs). I haven't made the switch to LCD yet. Both my CRTs just keep on kicking. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -

Man, I wish I had that kind of money to waste on a screen! Hopefully it wasn't this one- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824001193

My current screen is a Sony SDM-S73/B that I got for around $300 last year. I love it, but right after I purchased it, the prices came way down on LCDs...Ludicrous gibs! -

lcd screens are actually bigger than you think. My new 17" LCD Monitor is bigger than my old 17" crt and is actually the same size as a 19" crt. I got one of Dell's upper line monitors with the 1600x1024 resolution and 500x contrast ratio on ebay (brand new for $230 with shipping) I love it. -

Sad fact is I shopped around for about 3 weeks and thought this one might be a good one from monitoroutlet.com. Guess next time I could make a post asking which one should a person buy with "X" amount of dollars.
I figured the higher the contrast ratio and higher resoloution the better, and it had to look pretty good too. Also looked at a 19" & 21" black Sammy.
I even saw some 21" ers for about 3K....must have been super high quality or made of gold.
