top 10 things not to do to your car/truck...

a little compilation of things i've run into in the last year. some are funny, some are not. but by all means, things to avoid.

10- running all your positive power lines, 4, 8, whatever gauge, for everything from wipers and the heater to your system and other stuff, and then realizing that after you put all the shiny gold ends on,that they aren't the right length, and they don't all reach the (+) battery terminal.

9- using a cheap oil filter wrench to remove / put on an oil filter. you will inevitably end up slipping the wrench around the little knurly grippy things and smash the buggers... resulting in a filter that's either going to leak immediately or burst soon.

8- removing an oil filter that you put on way too tight by stabbing a screw driver through it and then trying to "wrech" it off like that. won't work. just won't, but it will get you extremely angry, covered in used oil, and cut up by the metal casing of the filter. gigantic c-channel pliars, however, do work. ... remember, hand tight, then 3/4 of a turn.

7- overtightening bolts. i have spent probably as much time removing broken bolts as i have building this damn truck. i finally invested in a torque wrench. the best 70 bucks i ever spent at home depot. (just got one out of hte oil pan, who'd have thought 40 ft pounds was too much for an oil pan screw! - apparently spec is "9").

6- the cart before the horse. don't put the transmission mount in before you've actually bolted it to the transmission. likewise, don't run new stainless fuel and brake lines before you're done welding and cutting certain portions of the frame.

5- don't get an intake manifold with a 2 inch rise, a carburetor adaptor with a 1 inch rise, an egr spacer with a 1 inch rise, and an air cleaner spacer with a 1 inch rise and expect your actual air cleaner to friggin fit under the goddamn hood. stupid egr.

4- 9 o'clock at night is not a good time to start a project.

3- laying in a pool of used motor oil, power steering fluid, antifreeze, and the kitty litter you were trying to clean it up with will most certainly give you a chemical burn when not wearing a shirt. it will also not get you ladies if you're a portly gentleman like myself.

2- uncle jack can't fix it if you break it even more before he gets there.

1- while a girl may have "relations" with you when you're covered in that spray on 3M rustproofing stuff, she's not somebody you want to bring home to mom. but you may want her at your stag party.

and now - the bonus !

0- while it may seem cool to DJ your block party, hours of repairs and blown audio components are not something you want to deal with.

That was funny... I especially liked #5. The more mistakes you make the more you learn. On the other hand, thanks for letting us know what not to do ;)

    Ill fall off a cliff.

    Thats fuggin' hilarious Vin.

#4 I know all too well. I cannot count the hours Ive spent under the lightpost in Kmart parking lot at 11 at night because a new way to mount my amps suddenly dawned on me!

#2 is also familiar. After I break something and sit in the house cooling off for a while, for some reason I figure that if I go back and try it again I wont break it anymore!

absolutely nothing at all, i'd have to assume... but i find it quite impressive that you can spend several hours at 11 at night in a parking lot... does time flow differently at kmart? :D

It does if youre there more than one day.

I used to work at a restaurant when I was 18-20 that was in the shopping complex along with a Kmart. I would think of some knew thing to do to my system (88 Olds Cutlas Calais) and after work Id park under one of the lights and re-work it. Also did this if something quit working while I was out running around at night. Find a parking lot at and light post and go to work.

Ah-ha. If I change it to 'I'm wearing shoes', I die while I'm being mugged. (That's a legit change, 'cause I never go around barefoot; just happen to be right now.) That prediction makes more sense, too. 'Cause I would not give up something to a stupid mugger. I'd fight 'em 'till one of us was down. And considering a mugger would probably be Mac's size - and I'm not, I'd probably be the one to be down.
