Hello,
Watched another very good movie, this one deals with WW I and a young French soldier who, along with four other men, are condemed to death because of self-mutilation. His finance doesn't believe he's dead and begins a very long search to find him. Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (also did The City of Lost Children) and has some of the grittiest trench warefare scences I've ever seen. The director made the crew see Saving Private Ryan dozens of times in order to understand the level of realism he wanted. Definately a sub-woofer tester!
Regards

A very good film. I watched this a few weeks back and really enjoyed it.
Ken, have you seen Tae Guk Gi - The Brotherhood of War? If not, I highly recommend it, one of the best war films ever. Better then Saving Private Ryan by far.If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.

Oops, sorry! Monday spelling, I guess.

War is a component of this film, but the film is not what I would call a war story.
Well done however.

Yep, a very good movie...beautifully shot in the non-war scenes and gritty as hell in the trench warfare scenes. Well done.
Ron - great suggestion with "The Brotherhood of War" too...a tremendous war movie.system 1:

Hey, I just happened to watch this movie over the weekend. I liked it. Reminded me of Amelie with the subtle French humor and backstory telling. The war scenes were pretty realistic, but like SPR. I think it did a good job at showing the deplorable conditions that the soldiers had to endure. I agree that the non war scenes were beautifully shot. I give a 3.5 outta 5.For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

Hello Ron,
I did and really enjoyed it, very much, thanks for the tip. What a dramatic story with amazing battle scenes! It had some of the same "flavor" as "Saving Private Ryan". To try and give you the feeling of how high stress battle can cause time to seem like it's moving in short bursts. My wife and I watched it over two evenings and we liked it a great deal. To see the Korean War from the Korean's point of view, both the North and South was amazing. The scenes that took place in North Korea really seemed real, too often it doesn't look cold, this one really did. Thanks for the tip.
We watched a classic, "Sink the Bismarck" over this weekend, I hadn't seen it for many years. We got a kick out of the German admiral who when told that a torpedo struck the Bismarck in the side without any damage said (in a thick "stage" German accent), "Zis is good!".
Also watched "On-Bak", my all-time favorite martial arts movie now on DVD. Tony Jaa is simply unbelievable! That's all there is to it, you won't believe a person can possibly do what he does. You just have to watch it. There's some good extras on the disc that shows some of the stunts. Gravity doesn't work the same way for this guy as it does for the rest of the world.
Have fun, Ken
