What receiver and/or amp should I buy?

First, thanks in advance for any help you may give me. I am new at this and am upgrading my stereo for the 1st time in 10 years.

I think I have settled on buying the following speakers:

Front Lsi9
Surround Lsi7
Center LsiC

1) Any advice on a receiver and/or amp that would go well with these speakers? (I'd like the total cost for the receiver and/or amp to be in the $1000 - $1500 range, but would be willing to pay a little more).

2) If you do recommend amps, do I need them for the front, center and surrounds? Or just for the front speakers?

3) Any recommendation for a sub in the $700 - $900 range?

Again, thanks in advance.
- Dave

Nice choice of speakers. I would put amps on all 5 channels. Maybe an Outlaw 750 "used" if you can find one. Marantz 9000 also comes to mind, as a nice 5 channel amp that could drive those nicely. Just don't starve them with a receiver to get alot of bells and whistles without guts. Any receiver that has preamp outputs will do nicely.

    Welcome to the forums!

    1. Kenwood.

j/k. 2. What Dennis said. Start with Outlaw, Rotel, B&K's receivers, Adcom- Ebay and Audiogon are nice resources you can use- I recommend all channels on amps.

    3. for $900- you can buy a real mean SVS.
    H/K Signature 2.1+235
    Jungson MagicBoat II
    Revel Performa M-20
    Velodyne cht-10 sub
    Rega P1 Turntable

I think B&K would be an excellent choice for an all-in-one receiver, although it overshoots your budget at $3200. Rotel would be an excellent choice in the lower price bracket. If going with amps, many here like Outlaw, I've no personal experience with it, but they've always gotten good reviews. I think Rotel is probably the best receiver in that price range, maybe the $1500 Marantz piece. Adcom has some pretty decent stuff for lower pricing, although a good separates system will still cost $3000-5000.

For subs, look into SVS, however another sub I can't say enough about is the Grotto from Martin Logan. Small, attractive, 10" aluminum woofer with tight, articulate bass, +/- 3db to 22Hz. Fills up a room nicely and is excellent for music. It has a triangular shape which makes it perfect for a corner. Runs $1000. SVS would probably out perform it in extension by a few Hz, but would be twice as big. Depends on your aesthetic requirements.
