Im in the market for a new reciever to replace my sony STR-DB940. Ive been concidering the new Yamaha RXV 656 (95W) or the 657 (100W). As far as my speaker setup goes I have RT-55i's for fronts and CS400i for center and small sonys for surround. Any feedback on pairing up this reciever with my speakers would be helpfull. Here are some links to the yamaha reciever specs.

Very nice speakers on the front but you really should look into some matching Polks for the surrounds.

Are you sold on the Yammy? If not you should at least look at Outlaw audio for seperates if you really want an upgrade.

I'm looking for something around the $500 range, maybee a little more for something worth it. The yamaha's had really good reviews and their auto calibration feature looked pretty neat

I have the exact front end (with RT15i rears) with a Denon AVR. For the $ you are spending a receiver is probably the best choice. I have never been a fan of Yamaha so I can't help with your question about them. I am very pleased with the combination of the Denon and my speakers.

I have a similar setup (CS245i center, RT55i fronts, RT25i surrounds) and my Yammie (RX-V496) drives them incredibly. In full surround or 2 channel I can't complain, the RT's are very receiver friendly and my yamaha gives em all they ask for.

In the $500 range for an AV receiver, Yamaha, Denon, Harmon Kardon, and Onkyo are probably all going to offer similar performance for the price.

Some features that are often overlooked and later regreted are full pre-outs, 12V triggers, multi room capability, and enough digital inputs (3 optical/2 coax minimum). I don't know if those features are included in the ones you are looking at, but they may be enough to justify a step up to the next price level. I like Denon and Harmon best because they seem to offer the best bass management features.

If your budget is $500, or a little more, order online and you can get a better model:
