Well the price was right and my finger twitched, so the last piece of the puzzle is done. I bought an HK 235 from Harman Direct, refurbed for a great price. Replacing the Onkyo HTR520 along with the rest of the Onkyo 770, soon to on Craiglist and/or ebay.

Mike,

How did you explain this to your wife again? "Look honey, this is how your bid? Oh yah, I bought a sub a couple of days ago too". She says " :( " I say " Happy Birthday (it is too) :D "

AVR HK235 (as soon as I pay for it)
R50s front
R15s surrounds
CSi3 center
Cadence XSub 12 (on it's way)

Combo rig:

SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
PB13Ultra RO

Yeah, I've been watching them all for a while. I wasn't going to do it, but found my self with a min left with a twitch. Minimum bump, I was sure I wasn't going to win.

Really poor timing...Wife's at church...I just can't be trusted. :D

Thanks for the assist. PMs don't seem to popup anymore.

Anytime...good luck with the wife. ;)

Keep in mind harman will overestimate shipping dates and actually ship units a lot earlier..they ship it ground from Arizona, at least you're on the west coast so it will be fast.

I'm sure UPS has already taken care of that... "Oh, HK, here catch" I'd be paranoid about buying anything more expensive and fragile over the net.

    1) Keep all packaging just in case
    2) Make sure you put the HK where it has room to breathe..my 235 runs warm/very warm, even in 2ch mode

The price of the 235? $5.00 more than Mike, but because I paid more the sent me a better one (maybe). Winning bid was $242.50

I'm a little concerned about that... Solid Oak ent. cab., 7" shelf, lots of ventilation on the side and I keep the doors open. But the Onkyo gets warm. If the HK gets hot, I'll have to get a fan.

You know, I saw a picture from somehwere with a small flat computer type fan mounted on a receiver. I think I'd better do a search...

There's actually a very small fan on the inside of the receiver, mounted on one of the heatsinks (on the right side). I have about 6in clearance between the top of the receiver and the next shelf. I find that this is enough for ventilation.

If your'e going to add a comp case fan, I would just use it to draw air into/or out of the shelf. I would not have the case fan run directly into the receiver as this will cause a dust build-up very fast inside the receiver.

Just picked up some bananas from RS. I'm using 16g wire, but the only one's they had that fit were 12g screw downs. This should work I would think, since the wire goes thru the sleeve, umbrellas out the screw into the connector.

    Anybody see any problems?

And Mike, since I'm only gonna have an inch of top clearance, it will have to be a fan on the side blowing cool air over the vents. :)

They'll work just fine, there will be a gap around the sleeve, but they won't pull loose. I'm using the same ones, I believe, with 14 gauge and no problems, except I have the flat mega cable so I have that gap issue too.

I like banana connectors, they do a very good job. I'm running 12ga so mine are nice and tight. 16ga will be fine, once you screw 'em down, they aren't going anywhere.

The fan should be fine too...

I did the same thing on a couple of hk630s, 430s, 235s and subs. Just going through the motions, then "POW", I won.

This is probably just what I need, so I'm glad it wasn't more.

After a couple of scratches my head(s) "Why isn't this working, I've got the 235 up and running. The EZ Set really made a difference in balance, very nice. The sound is amazing, smooth, no noise floor, very detailed and alot more headroom. I had to bring down my sub to better blend. My surrounds have come alive.

The Onkyo receiver is a nice entry level piece and did a great job for both the 770 speakers and my Polks, but the HK is a definite upgrade. The rated power of the Onkyo 520 is supposedly 130w/6 20/20. In whose marketing dream was that claim made. In general most peoples comments I've read are correct comparing Onkyo and HK. The Oink was brighter and not as detailed. Probably wasn't pushing more than about 30w X 5. I'm sure their mid and high end receivers are much better.

I can't wait to let her rip. I'm just listening at very low levels. I want to see how much heat and of course, make sure there are no issues.

The unit was perfect, looks brand new. So Mike, I guess it's worth $5.00 more than your first one was :D This has been another inexpensive, but profound upgrade.

You don't have to spend $1000s to have a nice sounding rig :) Course I am now sending my wife to CO to visit her mother with a new digital camera :( .
