Good and bad on vinyl........

Got a few new LP's in giving them a spin this afternoon and a couple things struck me...
I'd never heard 'Werewolves of London' on vinyl and I now have a new appreciation for the song. It sounds VERY different on LP. Much more rich and the basslines are incredible. What a difference over the CD.
On the other hand, after much anticipation, I bagged the the RCA LS version of William Tell Overature by Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony. What a disappointment. The vinyl is pristine but the performance and the recording is lackluster. I also have a version by the London Symphony on a Decca pressing and while it's better, I'm still ambivilent. Neither compares to the CD version of Kunzel and the Cinci Pops. You can't capture that sort of dynamic range on LP. If you ever want to just have your hair blown back by a piece, listen to the Kunzel version.
Ok, that's it for today, back to your reguarly scheduled programming.

Also listening to a pristine copy of the St. Elmo's Fire
That brings back good memories that have NADA to do with audio.
Summer of 1985, Leavitt Theater and my first girlfriend...hmmmmmmm

For a totally mind blowing experience try to find "Music from the Tonight Show featuring Doc Severson" on LP. It is truly one of the best ones I have as far as liveness and dynamics. Trumpet and sax is great on it. (Two of the most annoying sounds ever recorded IMO) Here is the funny part. It says "Digitally Mastered" on it. So... it is dynamic and all but believe it or not you can hear some digital noise on it. Ha Ha.
I also have two clean copies of "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits. One is nice and dynamic and the other is dull and lifeless. Neither one is as good as the original CD. The highs are more cutting and less bass definition than the CD. The SACD remaster I heard (at F1's) blows away either the original CD or LP.
Fleetwood Mac "Mirage" has an uncanny openess and liveness to it.
Don't think I'm **** here but I once bought "Best Of" of Manhatten Transfer on CD. I tried my best to listen and enjoy it but was totally freaked out with its gayness. Recently I picked it up on LP for 75 cents (by mistake, I had forgotton how much I hated it) and fell in love with the whole LP. It immediately became one of the top LP's on my playlist.
Some day I will do a "pick of the litter" list of LP's and list it.
Lately I've been scrounging the Good Will stores and antique shops looking for totally unknowns on mint vinyl for anywhere from 75 cents to $2. I always end up with at least 50% keepers and maybe a few "holy **** listen to this" ones. What a deal!

I read on audioasylum that one guy thinks "Stop Making Sense" by Talking Heads is a really awesome experience on LP. Ordered a copy off ebay today.Vinyl, the final frontier...

MM,
A couple of MUST haves if you don't already have them:
Harry Belafonte Live at Carnegie
Adreas Vollenweider Caverna Magica (GREAT SDA demo track)
Beethoven's 5th - Fritz Reiner/Chicago Symphony on RCA Living Stereo
Paganini Violin Concerto #1 - Viktor Tretyakov - Angel/Melodiya
I'll come up with more for you to look for.
Oh, I also picked up, for a dollar, an UNOPENED RCA Living Stereo pressing of Montavani and the Student Prince. I'm not exactly jazzed over Montavani but an unopened 45 year LP is WAY COOL.

I have this on CD and it's one of my top 10 best sounding analog transfers to cd I've heard. Whoever transfered this did an outstanding job and I can only imagine the vinyl version (esp. on your top notch analog rig) will blow you away. It's a great recording very dynamic and open and a pleasure to listen to. Looking forward to your impressions.

Gary, I've been very happy with the service of my Adcom. I bought it new in 1987 and it's been going strong ever since. I like the sound of these amps and have never felt the need to upgrade....although soon I'll be doing some upgrades.

Come on Max you have to admit for ME that was a pretty subdued response. Btw, real eggs are the only eggs....
Thread relevant content: What was the name of the album (Lp, vinyl, black gold...whatever antiquated term you prefer) which had a fried egg on the cover? (a pic of course...not a real egg!) I don't remember so I hope someone else does.

The Harry Belafonte thing has been highly regarded for years as the best "live" recording of all-time. Kind of makes me want to just get down and get funky with Harry. Why are the best recordings some of the worst MUSIC?
There's a REASON that Mantovani remained unopened for 45 years.

Agreed re the Montovani but why did the dumb **** buy it in the first place? He didn't even open it to figure out that it sucked.

Maybe he bought two, and the first one he listened to bored him to death. Right there with The Living Strings, and Hugo Winterhalter.
