What is the best way (without TONS of prep work) to paint a house.. (wood siding)...
As much as I wish we had vinyl siding, I fully understand why we can't get it - however that isnt going to stop me from improving this house...
So I am looking for ways to paint the house, it dosnt have to nessicarially be FAST ways... but quick that dosnt require a ton of plastic, tape and all that ya know? I mean I know a spray gun of sorts would require me to plastic up the foundation and I just dont have the patience for that at all - and there isnt really a way to tape up everything I would need to...
I dunno, I am just looking into ways to improve the house cheaply and effectively that will last a while ya know?
I hate wood siding. Never get it on your house, ever...
Stick to vinyl.
Any suggestions, tricks, types of paints, best type of paints? esimated cost to paint a normal size house with a garage attachment? etc...
Thanks in advance.

Just spray on some stucco  it seems to work well out here in Cali. Actually my old man paints houses on the side, he always uses brushes and rollers, takes more time and more paint, but leaves a better product for his customers in the end, plus it gives you more control so you don't have to tape the place up....

Plastic and tape off everything one day and spray the next day.

Stucco? Stucco retains water overtime - no thanks, we get alot of rain here.
Yeah I wouldnt mind using a brush, but I am just curious if there are alternatives to this ya know? I dont mind buying a big ol brush and slapping on some paint!
Thanks, keep em coming!
I like vinyl because it is easy to clean, didnt say it looked better! ...
How hard would it be to roll siding? I mean it is slanted and all ya know?- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
ya know? Hire someone to do it.If...

Cost money!
I will have to do it or it will never get done!
Hmmm... I may hire someone to vinyl the windows and trim though... I wonder how much that would cost.
Maybe use current money to paint the house and christmas/bday money to get the trim/windows vinyled up... *ponders*- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

Sid - You still getting birthday money  ? Where do I sign up

I live in the house
I guess you kind of have to understand the situation...
Imagine being the only guy in the house watching everything falling in, you know how to fix it but don't have the tools/funds to do it.
Well I am trying to fix it, and do it while I am still here.
I am basically doing what you (the Dad) would do.
Will have to fix/patch the deck soon as well.
I hate piss poor craftsmenship, completely pisses me off.

Spraying gets paint on EVERYTHING. They sprayed our barn and garage before we bought the place, and the neighbors were telling us how their cars were covered with fine paint specks and they had to take them to a detailer to be cleaned up. 'Course, it also didn't help that it was a barn and a garage, and they didn't give two **** about taping anything up. I've had to scrape clean EVERY window... and that's not as easy on old barn windows as it is on house windows.
My suggestion, buy a few nice brushes, some paint, and a nice ladder, and have at it the way people have been doing for YEARS...Ludicrous gibs! -
First you need to look at the condition of the paint. If it's peeling, you'll need to scrape that off. Yeah, it does suck.
Secondly you will really want to prime your wood siding. I know this is an extra step, but it will help in the long run and make your paint look better and adhear better to your house. Get yourself a latex primer which can be brushed, rolled, or sprayed on.
Lastly the paint. Don't go cheap, the extra money will be worth it in appearance and the actual application. Cheap paint is runny, quality paint is thicker and sticks to your surface better. Most hardware stores (lowes/home depot) have a 'good', 'better', 'best' option...stick with the better or best. Name brands to choose from: American Tradition, Glidden, Behr, Olympic... Go latex with this as well.
A gallon of paint will cover 400 square feet and the cost varies, but expect about $20 per gallon with a decent discount if you buy a five gallon bucket.
Application...brush, roller, sprayer. Really your choice, but if you go sprayer, don't go cheap here either. The cheap sprayers get clogged by latex paint and causes a huge mess.
The project will cost a good chunk of change, but if it's done right, it'll look good and last for years.
hope that helps...RTi4-fronts

Probally will do that to be honest... looks like the best way...
Will probally do it next summer... along with getting the trim around the house vinyled up... hmmm
Right now I need to fix the deck before I fall through it or something. Scary stuff I tell ya...
The paint isnt peeling, I dont think its ever been "painted" before, it looks like the original coat that was on there before from the factory, a deep primer of sorts...
It has some wood **** holes and what not, nails coming out - I dont know, its in fairly rough shape. I am going to borrow a pressure washer and clean everything up a bit and take a closer look at it. But everything is in some serious need of something...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

Next summer?, you going to come back to this thread and ponder on the recommendations  Do it now, while the idea is in your head.
Guys, I am looking at purchasing a nice two channel rig, I will be finalizing all of your recommendations over a two year period when I have enough money to reconcile it with the wife. -
Well you have to understand this will be souly on me, I am fairly content on making sure that this house is up to speed on everything before I move out in 5-6 years. Period and end. I dont mind shelling out cash, but baby steps will have to do it...
I think a good wash job would be good enough for now, its in dire need of that, thats for sure...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

Ron is right bubba, you get what you pay for with paint. If you're going to put all that hard work into it, get a very good quality paint.
As far as shortcuts, unfortunately there aren't any.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -
$20 might be a little low...but you don't need a designer paint to get quality. I wouldn't pay $40 per gallon either, depending on where you live, you should be able to get 5 gallon bucket of quality paint for $75-80. Stay away from designer paints, in fact most of the time the desinger paint is nothing more than a different lable.
Steve is right, there aren't any corners to cut with paint...and if you do, people will be able to see.RTi4-fronts

I guess I will just save up and see where I stand...may do this in a few years. Dont know, it is definetely on the list though...
need to buy a car!
Ron, my house will come when it comes - but I kind of feel my Mom deserves a house that isnt going to fall in on her once I'm gone and cant fix everything as it breaks (and will break if I dont fix it soon)- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

You are to be commended for your concern and willingness to make sacrifices in order to help out around the house and keep your mom in good shape.George Grand wrote: »

We just painted our house. well stained the cedar siding and painted the trim. I HIGHLY reccomend Sherwin Williams Duration paint! It costs about 35-40 bucks a gallon, but this stuff is SWEET! It has a lifetime warranty, it's not real thick, so it spreads real easy and covers REALLY well. fantastic stuff! oh, and it's self priming so you technically don't NEED to prime, but it's still a good idea.
if you're going to be doing this job yourself I HIGHLY reccomend you NOT! it is so much work and it's HARD work. scraping is the worst. We did about half the trim and windows (wood windows, I had to re-glaze them and everything, NOT fun). after that much work we got fed up and realized there was no way we could do it all ourselves without it taking 2 or 3 summers.
