The definition of prog seem to be fairly wide to most folks. Back in the '70s I don't know if I would have classified Rush, Kansas or Styx (among others) as prog, but looking back, many of their songs certainly contained prog sensibilities. Styx to a lesser extent. Rush, I realize now, has been a prog band all the long. I liked their first three or four "album", but moved on when they seemed to become more commercial.

Let face it, prog bands, especially in north America, have to sacrifice commercial success to remain somewhat true to the form. Radio sucks in the US. XM and Sirius not withstanding. There's just no room for prog.

Until a couple of years ago I thought prog was long gone. Prog-metal? The first time I heard Opeth Deliverance I thought, "Oh sure I'll give it a listen." Two year later I heard Damnation. Could this possibly be the same group?

I've only listen to the last two Porcupine Tree CDs and am really intrigued by the earlier stuff.

I found Blackfield at Fry's a couple of weeks back. It gets better with each listening, but is it really prog?

    What is prog to you?

    Dream Theater and Savatage rock.
Progressive Metal is what I like to call them.

MSG and House Of Lords were decent back in the day as well.

Friends, our album got reviewed in the recent Progression Magazine (Prog Rock magazine)

    http://www.progressionmagazine.com/

It wasn't super flattering but they did say a few cool things about the album. Not bad for an amateur attempt - 10.5 out of 15 rating amongst the big boyz isn't bad eh?

Nightwish is my second favorite right now. I love nearly every song they have. For those that dont know, theyre from Finland, play very heavy with a keyboard that sounds like cellos and a classically trained chick singer. Theyre awesome!

Stratovarius is another band Im into.

Nightwish is actually power metal/symphonic metal. Their earlier stuff can be considered power metal. I saw them live last year. Tarja is beautiful. I also got her solo single where she sings classical type stuff. Check out www.tarjaturunen.com

What's your favorite NW album? "Once" is my favorite album. Isn't "Love Ghost Score" a f*cking masterpiece? I also love "Everdream" from their "Bless the Child" album.

Damn, I think I'm gonna change my sig to something from NW. Yeah!

You should check out Kamelot. The chick from Stratovarious did some guest vocals on there. Kamelot is pretty much Nightwish with a male vocalist. I saw them back in Dec and they're coming back in Sept. Gotta see them again. www.kamelot.com

Oh yeah, the beautiful Siren of Nightwish:D

What's up with this time limit edit thing?

Hit the wrong button and prematurely posted the previous reply... Here's the completed post...

    =======================================================

Nice old thread... Quite a number of top examples listed... Pink Floyd, Genesis (though I think think the early, Gabriel-led stuff more ArtRock-ish and the later, post-Gabriel more CrapRock-ish), Zappa (let George be Mr. Grand), King Krimson and my beloved Yes... Close to the Edge tops my ProgRock list...

For more well-known, classic, ProgRock names try...

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - S/T, Tarkus (Is this your ELP, Mr. Buhl?)
Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed
Traffic - John Barleycorn Must Die, Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys
    Dave Mason - Alone Together
Jethro Tull - Aqualung, Thick as a Brick
Alan Parsons Project - I Robot
Supertramp - Even in the Quietest Moments

    For more from lesser knowns...

    Wishbone Ash - Argus
Focus - Moving Waves (remember "Hocus Pocus"? No? Think yodeling...)
    Tangerine Dream - Phardra
Rick Wakeman - Six Wives of Henry VIII
Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (Exorcism anyone?)
Renaisance - Turn of the Cards
    Ambrosia - Ambrosia
    10cc - 100cc

For more, but more shaded towards ArtRock...

Audience - House on the Hill
    It's a Beautiful Day - It's a Beautiful Day
    Roxy Music - Avalon
    More later,
    Tour...

Ditto... major tongue in cheekage... very funny.

For me ProgRock's was always an easy defintion: Rock you cannot dance to.

BTW... Focus' Moving Waves is actually a pretty sttrong LP, yodeling not withstanding.

Yet that doesn't stop them from trying during "Roundabout" at Yes concerts. Yes, it is a disturbing sight, but so bad as the alternation between the frenzied writhing and slow weaving that may be observed during "Heart Of The Sunrise".

Not sure if that's an answer to my question or you're re-iterating my mention of Yes, or both...but yeah I figured you'd chime in on this thread.

Got any other suggestions beyond what I've mentioned, I assume you do?

LoL... I saw that guy summer of '71 in the Akron Rubber Bowl (Opening act: The Eagles; 2nd act: John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra)

Guy simply confused dancing with imitating a beheaded chicken... but to his credit he didn't even try during John Mc's set. Then again the drugs may not have kicked in at that point.

I am a big fan of progressive rock. I love Rush, Kansas, Yes, Dream Theater, King Crimson, ELO, Allan Parsons Project, Floyd, Queensryche, Faits Warning, Kings X, etc.

My fist recollection of prog rock was my oldest sister jamming Rush's 2112 on vinyl in the basement when I was 5 years old. I instantly fell in love with it. From that moment on, Rush has been and always will be my favorite band. Sure I get into other groups and branch out to other stuff, but I always come back to my Rush roots.

Prog toward the late 70s started being less ambitious and more pretentious, then pretty much faded as the big bands started fragmenting or moved to more airplay. That said, I still get off on the early stuff...here's a few that don't get remembered much...

    Camel
    Caravan
    Todd Rundgren's Utopia
    Gentle Giant
Triumverate - ( a German ELP clone, but very good)
Starcastle - a Yes clone from NJ with a guy who sounds very similar to John Anderson. I think they still have a cult following in the east.

    Show's that were noteworthy:
Yes - Yes Album, just prior to Fragile, but with a few Fragile songs (1972)
Yes - Close to the Edge
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound (full costume extravaganza)
Genesis - Lamb Lies Down (in the top 5 concerts I've ever seen...course I was on Windowpane), Seconds Out was another monster, as was Wind and Wuthering
ELP - Pictures at an Exhibition, Trilogy, Brain Salad Surgury (in the top 3), Works 1
    Pink Floyd - Animals...top 3
Gentle Giant...a bunch of times at medium sized venues
    ELO...the one with Dorothy's shoes
TRs Utopia - the album with Glass Guitar song and the next solo project Revelations (might not be the name, but the mushrooms were good).
Kansas - Point of Know Return

I'm probably forgetting a few, but those were some of the highlights of the 70s :D. I saw several of the bigger bands in the 80s and a few times since, but it wasn't the same...kids, marriage, work. Still spin some of it now and again.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE
