Very informative article. I have always suspected that I really don't know as much as I think I do. Now I'm convinced of it!

They can all claim 100 watts, they just don't tell you how that 100 watts sounds.

YES!!!!!!! I have heard 3 wpc amps that sound great and 200 wpc amps that sound like crap. The total power output is nowhere near as important as the sound. Most of the time we are only driving our speakers with less than 10 wpc. That said my front SRS-SDAs are bi-amped with a total of about 450 wpc and my rears 2.3ti are bi-amped with about 400 wpc and each (2) cs440i in the center has about 150 watts going to it. Lots of power is great but I would get rid of these amps if they didn't sound good and go with less power if it sounded better.

Agreed. Still, it chaps me that receiver manufacturers make it nearly impossible to make apples-to-apples comparisons, because they don't use uniform criterea for calculating stated output ratings. Interpreting receiver specs is kinda like sexing a newborn animal - sometimes you gotta roll 'em over to see what they really are! :p

God gave you 2 of the best tools to compare equipment and even put them in a very handy spot on each side of your head. Stop worrying about the specs and start listening.
    Good Luck, Phil

Just sharing info on an otherwise boring Sunday P.M. As I basically said, the more I learn, the less I know . . .
