Where are the Beatles? Metallica? Did they just pull names out of a hat?

The list isn't of the top sellers of all time, just a comparison of how many records AC/DC has sold compared to some of the more popular pop, r&b, country, and rock artists.

Yeah, over the years, I'd have to day that I'm 15-20 of those sales, myself.

The fact they used U2 on that list makes it flawed.

    http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=11worst

    Can't stand that group.

I'm glad R&R is still alive though, now if they could just learn how to make a decent recording so I can listen to it again!
    - Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

Here are the all-time biggest selling artists, as of 6/20/2005, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA)....

    http://www.riaa.com/gp/bestsellers/topartists.asp

The stats are for US album sales only. Kind of surprising that Bon Jovi still hasn't caught to John Denver.

However, when it comes to numbers of gold, platinum, and multi-platinum certified sales, no one can touch Elvis....

Thanks for the link Danny. A most interesting read, but I wonder how much that list changes when looking internationally????

You have to remember too that AC/DC is still releasing LP's. Lately they are even offering a complete set of albums. All of their LP's are still being sold new. Of course I'm sure CD sales tops that by magnitudes!

Unfortunately, I don't know where I can locate such a database for international sales. IFPI??

The international marketplace is a whole different place than the US market. Acts like Garth Brooks or James Taylor are much less popular than, say, Genesis or Olivia Newton-John.

Man, Garth Brooks kicks butt on the "per record" metric...
There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

Yeah, and he knew what he was doing by "retiring" from the industry. You wait and see if he doesn't come out of retirement in a few. His "comeback" cd and tour will make him and his label even more wealthy and he'll move up another notch or two on the list.

You didn't hear that Garth is going to release his next album via Walmart only?

Nope, but that doesn't surprise me at all. I'm sure that he get a larger cut that way.

that and it's probably genius marketing at work..most of the demographic that makes up most of gb buying public, most likely spends a large amount of time in 1 walmart or another..

No doubt, AC/DC is benefiting from the same phenomenon that the band I worship has been helped out by....re-masters encourage many people to re-purchase the same titles over and over. Led Zep has used this several times now.... :p  ;):D:o  (as has every other top selling band) Plus many of these older artists have had the pleasure of selling on original vinyl and then cd. Kudos to AC/DC though; they certainly deserve to have that many units sold. Christ, the Beatles had mono and stereo vinyl!

    See this link:

    http://www.riaa.com/gp/bestsellers/topartists.asp

This is for US SALES ONLY.

I see Zep has slipped they used to be behind the Beatles....I'm not sure if this list is THE LIST or not. I can't believe Elvis has surpassed Led Zep in a matter of a few years.

The Link below shows sales as of Aug. 2003. Different source however.

P.s. These lists are like statistics and audio specs.....they can be altered to fit any situation :D

Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. It's funny to see all the artists that have outsold THE WHO, even after 40+ years of album sales, they have just got to 20 million. I guess that's just for the US, but still....

Good point Noel.....I'm suprised at Hendrix as well. Although the Who suprises me more. Again...it'd be interesting to see International/Worldwide sales.

These figures are not entirely accurate. They change by the day, much less week, month, year, etc. That could possibly explain why The Who's and Stone's album sales seem so low. It is only updated at the request of the artist or whoever has the authority to do so for them.

For example, KISS have actually sold well over 50 million in the US. The non-makeup years alone were well over 10 million, but they won't petition the RIAA to update their totals because the cheap mofos would then have to pay more royalties to any outside songwriters (including some former replacement members, specifically Vinnie Vincent), producers, etc. They refuse to have the current up to date figures recertified, even though there have been lawsuits over it.

Sound Scan, which was intiated in 1991 is a much more accurate indicator for sales totals of any album released after that point, and actual sales totals since then of older albums released before that, but even Sound Scan does not include every single last album sale as there a few retailers who don't participate in it.
