I recieved the Indian Jones box for my birthday but I already had it. I'm thinking of returning it for the LOR Trilogy. Does anyone know which verson had the best sound. I noticed one had 5.1 ex, another had a mix of dts 6.1 & 5.1 & 5.1 ex?!? The individuals copies are different as well.

I'm not a huge LOR fan (haven't seen the last 2), but I love good sound.

What's out there and what's best? Thanks.

I am pretty sure the "extended editions" boxed set has DTS for all three movies; I have the three individual movies with DD and hhave been planning to get the boxed set.... This is one trilogy worth owning.

i have the theatrical version with DD 5.1ex. sounds awesome.

The more expensive expanded LOTR trilogy has DTS 6.1. I'm sure it will sound better but not by very much; especially if you incorporate Dolby Prologic IIx in your current 5.1 or 7.1 speaker setup. If you're not a HUGE fan of the LOTR- I say save your $ and get the basic trilogy.

Even if your not a huge fan, get the extended editions, they are much more complete over the theatrical versions.

I also recommend the Extended Editions. Even if you aren't a huge fan, the longer versions are better and they are the only ones that offer the DTS-ES mix. Definitely something worth owning. In my opinion, these films are the best looking and sounding DVDs out right now. Not to mention the fact that if you are at all interested in the "behind the scenes" features of DVD's, these are also the best available, as they all have 2 discs worth of docs that cover pretty much all aspects of making these films. Hands down the most interesting on all three is the hour-long principal photography docs, in which we get to see how friendly the actors got, and how much they liked to joke around.

You've all convinced me to get the extended version. I'll proably pick it up tonight or tomorrow and watch one over the weekend. Thanks.
