Setting up RM6500-Oynko TX-SR302

Hi,

New to the group. Just purchased the RM6500 and am hooking it up to an Oynko TX-SR302. I am reading the Polk manual and it tells me the ideal configuration is to set the front to "large", center to "small", surround to "small" and sub to "off".

In the configuration guide with the receiver there is no mention of "large" or "small" settings, only "off" for the sub. Am I missing something? The on-line support for Onkyo is rather useless.

Any suggestions?

    Welcome to Club Polk!

Read through the rest of the manual? It's gotta be there... Those things can be tough sometimes, just scour it you should find it eventually.

There is no reference in the Onyko manual for "large" or "small". A call to Onkyo's tech support did not yield any help either. Is there another way to set speakers up for "large" and "small"?

    Would welcome any suggestions.

    Thanks

I just downloaded the manual and what you need to do is adjust the crossover frequency under speaker set up. In some receivers or DVD players only two settings are allowed Large and Small in your receiver you can adjust the frequency to a finer scale of 20Hz.

To choose the proper frequency consult the manual of your speakers and look for the -3dB response limit at the lower end and set it as close to this as possible without going lower. If these speakers came with the receiver as a package no adjustment is necessary as the manual states but, if you get larger/different speakers later what you need to do is adjust this setting.

JP, the reason for the difficulty in reconciling the Onkyo and Polk instructions is that it can't be done. The suggested Polk hookup method would require setting the center and surround speakers "small" in the receiver so that their low bass would be output through the main speaker terminals and then into the sub with speaker wire. Your 302 has no provision for doing this. Therefore don't attempt to use the Polk method; instead use a coaxial cable with an RCA plug on each end from the 302's sub pre-out to the LFE input on the sub, if present, or either the left or right input if not. If you don't have a suitable cable, one such as this shouldn't run more than about $10. The speakers would be connected directly to the terminals on the 302 with regular speaker wire.

Of course, the sub would then be set in the receiver to operate using mode 1 so as to receive all low bass. The best setting for the crossover in the 302 would probably be 120Hz, since the sub rolls off above that point and the speakers in the 6500 roll off below about 130 Hz.
