JMlab 920.1

I'll be picking up a used pair of JMlab Electra 920.1's on Saturday to take the place of my SDA-1C's. I had been considering new Magnepan 1.6QR's, Gallo Reference 3's, or some used Spendor monitors.
They'll be run on a tube amp, but I'll probably stick with a solid state pre for now on these. The current owner (whose gear is in the picture) runs these on Thorens, Audio Note, and Scott gear right now.
What I like: time aligned drivers, good bass, detailed metal tweeter, overall coherence between the drivers. I did see a pair of demo Utopias at the Gallo dealer, but $$$$$ for them.

And only a 40 minute drive away from me. I haven't been this eager about getting a piece of audio gear since I got the SDA-SRS. -
Emlyn-
If you are interested in selling your SDA's, I may be interested in buying them . I might actually be close enough for local pickupLudicrous gibs! -

Not the SDA-SRS, but the SDA-1C's I could part with now for a reasonable price for a fellow Polkie. No rush. Send me a PM if you're interested. -
Oooooooh!

Got them yesterday afternoon after listening to some jazz on vinyl at the owner's place with a 10 watt SET amp. I set them up at home with a Parasound C2 and A21 and Denon 3910 SACD and DVD-A just to get them started. I'll be switching the speakers to a 100 watt KT88 based tube amp soon. These are extremely revealing, clean, accurate, and detailed speakers. In comparison to the previous owner's system, the output from the electronics I was using suffered from a slight case of solid state "digititus" with the differences in midrange and top end smoothness very obvious. The bass is even smoother and punchier than on my SDA-SRS, but not as deep. Imaging and soundstage depth are excellent. They weigh about 105 lbs each. The tops are a matte dark grey finish which I like a lot more than the high gloss on the Polk LSi's. The dark cherry side panels look great. I think the LSi15's would benefit in appearance if their side panels were extended to the tops like these. I give the Electra's five out of five big grins.

I haven't gotten around to taking any myself yet. Still got some rearranging to do. The color balance is a little off in the photos of the previous owner's system above. The cherry is really quite a bit darker. -

I didn't realize what a large company Focal.JMlab has become. They have five full lines of traditional speakers, one line of speakers compatible with iPod's, and one line of in-walls. Plus they manufacture drivers for other companies. The order in pricing starting with the top is: Utopia, Electra, Profile, Cobalt, and Chorus. My guess is Tweeter would carry one of the lower three lines in store, leaving the upper two (Utopia and Electra) with local high end dealers. It's hard to tell where price matching points and performance matching lines with Polk's speakers are. -
I know theyre going to power it with krells.... this is going to be interesting.Magico M2, JL113v2x2, EMM, ARC Ref 10 Line, ARC Ref 10 Phono, VPIx2, Lyra Etna, Airtight Opus1, Boulder, AQ Wel&Wild, SRA Scuttle Rack, BlueSound+LPS, Thorens 124DD+124SPU, Sennheiser, Metaxas R2R

Excellent choice Emlyn. It's nice to see another person move beyond SDA's.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
