hk stereo receiver with problem

I've got a stero HK receiver (HK 3400) that has developed a problem in the left channel. It intermittantly distorts out, but seems to be fixed by tapping on the unit, then it will be okay for hours or days. Leads me to believe there's a loose connection somewhere inside. Problem occurs in headphone output and in main output, so I assume it is in the preamp somewhere, it's present on all inputs including tuner. A quick look through the inside didn't reveal anything that jumped out at me. If the unit was working perfectly it's probably only worth $50 or $75 and I'm not using it much so I'm trying to figure out what to do with it. Here are my ideas:

1. Sell it on the fleamarket for $10 or $20 or just for free and someone could pay contingent on whether or not they fixed it or found it useful in any way.
2. Ditch on ebay as a fixer upper.
3. Someone might be able to steer me to some kind of permanent fix for this thing (super long shot).
4. Upon looking at the power amp board inside it seems like it would be fairly simple to take the lines from the preamp and attach them to some rca plugs on the back of the unit and "make" a 40w x 2 power amp out of it that I could possibly put to some kind of use.

I didn't consider having it professionally repaired because for $50 or $100 of repair fees I don't really have a use for it. The unit cost $400 in 1994, but nowdays there's better to be had for far less.

Any feedback or ideas?

Well, the point is, I really don't need it, so I'm not going to replace it. I have ditched some other run-of-the-mill gear that wasn't working properly, but this piece just sounds too good when it works to ditch.

If that's the case, turn it into a fun DIY project. Winter's soon approching, save it till then to give you something to do. Who knows you might just have a knack for fixing gear.

Wiggle some of the controls next time it happens. If one brings it back, hit it with a little cleaner,
