i have a neighbor who bought a pickup last week, turns out the radio is shot, and he wanted me to help him fix it up, he wants a sub in there and its a regular cab, so i was thinkin an 8 or possibly that shallow 12" pioneer, but i cant find any reviews on it good or bad. Anyone have any links or experience?

He has a sony cd player he insists on using, and the speakers are 6.5" even though the hole in the door cover is roughly 3" square..... i dont know how thats gonna work  its gonna basically be a work truck, so i really cant go overboard, and since it has 219000 miles, i dont think its gonna be around very long, so i was thinking just throw some pioneer 6.5 coaxs in the doors and the cd player, no amp, since its just for work, he doesnt NEED a sub lol.

What make and model is the truck? Also, if you have a sub, you'll need an amp.

the shallow pioneer 12s are supposed to be pretty decent, but PT is right, you'd need an amp, which involves a bunch more wiring etc., as i'm sure you know...

sounds like you're in for a lot of drilling, sawing, and general cursing... ha ha to you... :D

If all he's wanting is some decent music and an amp and sub install isnt really practical then I suggest just getting a set of 6.5 components or coaxials and a good head unit and be done with it. Itll never produce great SQ but itll sound pretty damn good, be cheap, easy to install and easy to uninstall should he want to take the gear with him if he sells.

well, Mac got the idea... lol btw its a 1987 F150, he paid $600 for it which i think was too much, but whatever. I looked on the crutchfield site and thats where it said the speakers were 6.5, i didnt actually take the door off yet, so it might be something different

Get a set of these and run em off one of one of these.

There ya go, a great sounding system with very high quality pieces that he can take with him to his next truck for less than $400. The 6.75" mid may take some hacking to get to fit but it would be worth it to have a little extra displacement. Run the tweeters off the h/u's front channels and the mid off the rear for more power.

A 10" polk db sub would work fine... get a 200 x 1 bridged at 4 ohms amp, and call it a day. you can do that for probably 200 bucks... get a box for another 40... wiring kit for 40... you're under 300 bucks.

    4 coaxials at 75 a pair = 150... head unit at 150 - 200...

you're looking at 650 to 700 plus a day or two's worth of work... to me, it's worth it, but not in a beat up 600 dollar truck.

get 2 speakers for the front (6.5" or whatever) and a 75 dollar generic cd player (road gear, whatever)... a 100 or 120 bucks is worth it in any vehicle to be able to listen to your cd's at a "hearable" volume.

well, i like the idea of the db components, but knowing him, he'll want to put 6x9 15 ways or some crap like that, cause he thinks a. bigger is better b. cheaper is better c. speakers with 15 lil speakers on them must be good lol. if i did get the components, i would have to find a place to mount the tweeters, which would be fun. id rather just get coaxs, less work :)
looks like crutchfield also had a makeover, wonder if its related to polk's?

Then get the coaxials instead. They will work just fine.

Tell you buddy that 3 and 4 way 6x9's are merely a 6x9 mid and 2 or 3 tweeters and they sound way too bright and thin for my tastes. The MMC690 is the ONLY exception Ive ever run across. Its the best 6x9 on the market and its a 3 way. "Supertweeters". Hmphm.
