Hey Guys,

I just pulled the trigger on purchasing a JVC 56" HD-ILA (Model HD-56G786). I did a ton of research on what features (not all display!) that I wanted in a TV of this type (LCoS) and did some "screen testing" in the stores. The problem is that the TV is on backorder and may not be available for at least 5-7 business days (possibly longer). But, good things come to those who wait, right?

I also purchased the DVE calibration disc which I should get this Thursday - I have the S&V disc but I believe the DVE disc is better for HD TV calibration, and will soon be subscribing for HD service.

Anyway, just thought I'd mention that I have recently joined the ranks of you big screen folks.

The worst thing about up-grading to an hdtv is the lack of programing available.I currently subscribe to Directv and they have about a hand full of channels, and nothing but rumors to whats in the future.

True, but I suppose the best part is that more and more programming will become available over time.

Most prime time shows on the networks are HD already. I like to watch Las Vegas in HD as the women are so freakin hot!

hey kberg.... congrats on your new purchase i am sure you will be very happy with you new found HD friend. I would check out avia's test disc as well. I have used both dve and avia. DVE has alot more video patterns on it but the ones that avia have are the major ones and they give a very detailed instruction on how to use each pattern and explain what and why you are looking for certian things in the pattern.(it also points how to use the patterns differntly for differnt types of tv's) Avia is a great tool to learn from.

wait til she gets to watch her reality TV shows in HD. I know that's what finally convinced my g/f that HD is better. Before, she always said she couldn't even tell the difference, that's how little she paid attention to the picture quality. lol

There's nothing like watching in things in HD. Currently on my cable I get all the networks (CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC, WB [yes the wb]), but they mostly only show prime time in HD. Most NASCAR is in HD and last year all but one (don't know why the skipped one) of the NFL season was HD. I also get INHD that shows some good stuff (it's a cable HD station). They have all the Ultimate Fighting Champoinship (UFC) fights on it. I also get ESPN, MSG, FOXsportsNY, PBS, HBO, CMAX, SHO, ENCR & TMC. Instead of buying or renting something I "might' want to see, I wait for it in HD, then by on DVD if it's a good one. I'm still waiting for Discovery (and I'm hoping SciFi down the road). ABC even shows some of their afternoon soaps in HD.

You're going to love it, and they wife will probably be excited as well once she sees the picture quality. Good luck. Enjoy.

wow, you have all those channels but not Discovery? That's one of the best channels in HD right now. I don't have CMAX, Encr or TMC in HD here but I do love me some Discovery!!!

I'm not sure who your provider is, but none of the reality shows I've watch are in HD. (probably because there are a lot of hidden camera and hand held stuff going on).

Hmmm, would American Idol be a reality TV? The show was broadcast in HD on the fox affiliate out of Los Angeles....

You're right, American Idle was in HD (not that I really watched it). But if I remember correctlly, only the "finials" were in HD (when they were done with the search part).

Well, it's finally here! I haven't even calibrated it yet and the picture (even on analog cable channels!) is incredible! After a friend of mine helped me move it to its final resting place and set it up, we popped in AVP - holy cow! I picked up "visual details" in that movie that I never saw on my 32" Toshiba! Post calibration will be an added bonus!

Question: Is there any kind of (relatively inexpensive) battery backup unit I can purchase in case the power to the TV cuts out? The reason I ask is because if power to the TV is cut off completely, the cooling fan can no longer cool the lamp after the TV is turned off, and I am informed by JVC that this event this would significantly shorten lamp life - any ideas?
