WTB: Tubes for my Audio Experience Symphonies preamp

I've never purchased tubes before, but I dont have much money to spend. The less out of my pocket the better. I'm just looking for a pair of back up tubes since now that I've got room for a second setup it doesnt seem to be getting a break. That and I leave it on for hours at a time when I'm gone and forget to shut it off. What would you guys recommend for an alt. rock fan?

lay it on me!

Luckily, you have plenty of choices -- most of which are inexpensive. For the 12AX7's, stick with Electro Harmonix or Sovtek 12AX7LPS. You can get 'em cheap on ebay or www.tubedepot.com or www.tubestore.com.
HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50” LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

I personally dont like NOS / Vintage tubes in mine. I say pick up a JAN 6x4 and some EH 12Ax7's good start and on da cheap, then go from there......

Have you tried NOS? besides the rectifier? NOS can sound the same as current production tubes however i havent had a microphonic vintage tube yet and they all sound great... New tubes are hit and miss on sound... Jan's sound good all around, Ive tried a ton of old tubes and love them all.. BUt its to each is own.... Ive rolled a ton of tubes in the last 6 months for my limited time with tubes anyways.. The sovtek 12ax7lps's were great tubes as well

mullard remakes, ton of jan's.sovtek.EH. amperex bugle boys, telefunken, GE, RCA, mullard, sylvania, ratheons, amperex 7308 orange globe and green... yugo's.. to name a few

paul ya know what, stop derailing the thread with this non sense.. you havent used NOS/vintage except the 6x4 you bought and the one i gave you.. its hardly experience to give to a newbie tube user.. I have alot to learn with tubes but have tried several vintage tubes in 2 different tube pre-amps and 2 tube amps... so i can speak from personal use.. for extended periods..

What ever  so name the tubes you rolled? and didnt like. I'm just asking why you say NOS/VINtage doesnt sound good when you have never used any, maybe 1 or 2... unless you bought a bunch of 12ax7's, tried them and decided you didnt like them..... Bad guy? Nah im not trying to make you look like that, your doing a stand up job of that all by yourself there bud.. by getting all defensive with me, seems you have turned right into the rest of em AROUND here... some i should say... No sweat i dont care anymore... carry on paul.. I'm done

Get used to it. Tubes give off a type of radiation that makes one belligerent after hours and hours of absorption.

The information has been well hidden, but I know a guy who knows a guy who has actual photos of "The Great Tubeophile Masacre of 1969" - broken tubes and bloody audiophiles everywhere.... at what was supposed to be a friendly gathering. Don't even look for information on the Tubeopalooza knifings of 1972... very sad, but VERY well covered up. You're just a Queen CD away from chasing down your neighbor with a septic weedwhacker.

    Raj,
Current production X7 tubes will cost you about $10 a pop. The best one IMO is the Sovtek 12AX7LPS.

I consider Electro Harmonix the standard and compare every other current production tube to them. Some will sound better and some worse depending on the tube type. But one thing's for certain, the EH house sound is great for everything.

The Sovteks i bought from earlyb a while back didnt really sound good IMO vs the EH's so i brought them to work to get ready to sell when i find out a guy at work plays the G-tar and has a Tube Amp. Gee wouldnt you know he has some old tubes.

    RCA 12AX7A gray ribbedplate 60's to 70's
sylvania 12AX7 gray plate square getter i think he said 50's
GE 5 Star 12AX7 gray plate and i think spare getter 60's

Havent got around to demoing anymore since i have been working on the house we just bought.

Now piss off and sell whatever Polkie love stuff you got from here on ebay.
