Here is an explanation of how I have things hooked up. Note: I have an older TV with only a cable in jack (no red white and yellow jacks).
Cable into house to cable in on cable box
Cable from cable box (labeled to tv/vcr) to ant. in on vcr
Cable from VCR (labeled RF out) to ant. in of RF modulator
Cable on RF modulator (labeled to TV) to TV set.
Red & White wires (labeled audio out) from dvd to R & L on RF modulator
Yellow wire on dvd (labeled video out) to video on RF modulator
Now, I can get all my cable channels, watch a VCR tape, watch a DVD and record a VCR tape (if I am watching that channel). I can't seem to do a timed recording on my VCR; I only get snow and no sound.
How should all this be connected ?
TV : RCA model F25281
VCR : GE model VG 4262
DVD : Magnavox model MDV453/17
RF modulator : TERK model MOD-34
Cable Box : Motorola

maybe it's because we're audio guys. I doubt half the people on here know how to set the timer on their own VCR's- I know I can't.
No offense but I think you might be in the wrong place. The forums for outdated, hard to operate video formats are just a keyboard & mouseclick away. Sorry friend.

Try simplifying the idea.
I would remove the FM modulator from the loop, and attempt a timed recording.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -

I would think you have a few options.
1. Get a splitter and some sort of switching device. So split the cable coming into the house between the cable box and the VCR inputs, so they are completely independent - now you can watch one thing and record another. Then you need something to switch between the outputs of the VCR, DVD, and cable box. If all of them have A/V outputs (the red, white, and yellow wires) join the 19th century and get a receiver to combine them all. Otherwise, I'm sure you can get something cheap at radio shack to switch between coax signals.
This is the way I would recommend going, because it keeps everything separate.
2. When you say you have to watch the same thing you're recording... do you change the channel on teh VCR, or is the VCR set to channel 3 and you change the channel on teh cable box? If it's the former, I don't know w hy you're having a problem with timed recording, unless you're leaving your cable box on. If it's the LATTER, then you need to put the cable box on whatever channel you want to record, LEAVE IT ON, and set the VCR to record channel 3. You see? The VCRs input is the cable box's output, so it can only record what the cable box is giving it. If the box is off, it will either get nothing (snow?) or it will be able to tune its own channels, I'm not sure which.
Hope this helps. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
Do you have digital cable? If you do then i know just what your problem is.

No i do beleive that he was refering to us. This is is third thread about the same topic during the course of two days. The other two can be found here.

I also beleive he was refering to us because i received a pm from him listing the model numbers of all his equipment and if i could help him about this same time yesterday. I replied back that i would gladly try and help him, and i told him that i was going to look up some information about those particular models of eq that night and i would get back to him about it.
I guess he was expecting an insanely speedy solution from us guys here on CP.
Twilson, i am sure we all want to help you out but you have to realize that not everyone is able to get on here everyday. You have to give it a little time instead of making another thread the very next day complaining to us about our lack of service. -
Hmnm, I wonder if he knows how to read and respond to a thread once he's created it. Maybe he just expects the ideas we give him to flow directly into his consciousness. If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Now, I am an expert in audio & video so maybe I can help
If everything works and you can record the show that is on TV as you are watching it then everything is most likely hooked up right. Through the power of deduction it must therefore be somewhere in the automation/setup (programming).
What do you use to switch channels; the Cable box or the VCR? If it is the Cable box then the VCR has to be set to Channel 3 or 4 depending on the setup to receive a signal to record otherwise you get static.
If you want to watch a show while recording another then the VCR will have to be first in order and it set to TV so that it will allow the full channel lineup to get to the cable box. But since you have it second the only channel the VCR will work consistently on will be either 3 or 4.
Its been a long time since I used coaxial for TV but from what I remember if the cable box is on it will only send a single channel and if is off it might send the entire signal. Think of it this way, if your cable box requires you to set your TV to either channels 3 or 4 then the VCR has to be set this way unless of course you put the VCR first but that can create hassles.
