Ok, chime in with a theory if you have one.
I have a Sony DVP-NS755V player. Here are the specs...
Progressive/SACD/CD/DVD Player - DVPNS755V/ 480P Progressive Pixel By Pixel Conversion Video Out/ SACD Multi-Channel Output/ CD-R/CD-RW, DVD-R/DVD+RW, DVD-RW (Video Mode), And MP3 Playback/ Picture Navigation/ Custom Parental Control/ Built-In Dolby Digital And DTS Decoding/ Multibrand Remote
blah blah blah... anyhoo
I put in a CD and out of the corner of my eye I noticed my processor says it's decoding this CD in HDCD!! (I knew it was an hdcd disc)
Now, am I on crack? Doesn't the Sony have to have HDCD decoding before the processor would pick up on that?
And lets say this Sony player does support HDCD...why in the hell wouldn't that be listed as a spec??
Pass the dutchie and let er' rip...anyone?

What type of connection are you using from the cdp to the processor?Political Correctness'.........defined

My theory is..... your Sony obviously DOES decode HDCD, but since no one cares about HDCD, much less knows what it is, they choose to leave that out of the specs.Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo.

+1 on G'Mo's comments---it must be HDCD compatible.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

I think I know where F1 is going with this, since you are using the digital output, you are actually using the DAC's in your (presumably) receiver, thus you are not actually experiencing the HDCD capability anyway.
I just came back and read this again, this may be completely incorrect. I dunno...Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo. -
Correct, he is using the DAC in his processor and that's why he's getting HDCD.Political Correctness'.........defined

Hugh?? I'll agree that he is using the processors DAC, but how is that HDCD?Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo. -
The Sony does not decode the HDCD.
The HDCD code is buried in the data, non HDCD equipment can and does pass it along until the data reaches HDCD equipment.Dodd - Battery Preamp
Monarchy Audio SE100 Delux - mono power amps
Sony DVP-NS999ES - SACD player

from the website FAQ
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/hdcd/hdcdfaq.aspx
Do I need an HDCD receiver (in addition to the HDCD player) to take full advantage of HDCD technology or will a regular receiver work as well?
A: You need either an HDCD CD player or an HDCD receiver for HDCD to work. However, for a non-HDCD CD player to work with an HDCD receiver, it must have a digital output that is connected to the HDCD receiver, which then decodes the signal. The analog outputs of a non-HDCD CD player cannot be decodedDodd - Battery Preamp

So...
The sony passes along the HDCD signal...the processor say's it's receiving an HDCD signal, but it's not playing a true HDCD signal?"she had the body of Venus, with arms." -
ok...sorry. Just saw your post.
Now that I can understand.
