to loud?

just out of curiosity how do you know if your running your amp/subs to hard? are there tell tale signs that i can listen for? basiclly i dotn want to blow or fry my amp/subs and im trying to be proactive....

you hear distortion if you're running too hard. distortion in a sub manifests itself as a buzzing or straining sound in a test tone... in normal music, it's sound like a 'whoomp' or 'pop' where there shouldn't be one... if you want to be sure you're not overdriving anything in your system, go nyah for a walkthrough on setting your gains.

the main reasoni ask is because when i drive my car i can not hear any problems with the ssubs realy (other than the rattles coming from my car). but when i open the trunk to listen to them its a whole nother story. I dont like what i hear at all.
BTW i am running 2 MM2124 off the Sony Xm-d400p5. I mean i dont think i can over drive subs with the amp. should i be worried about frying the amp, i have it turned up almost all the way right now... -

ok i read the articele, good read. the one dispute i have with it is that i still ahve my stock HU. which means i ont have a seperate sub volume control. i normaly keep the stock electric POS equilizer it comes with around half the dots (for the bass) so i dont think the bass is realy that loud.
another question, i do primarily listen to rap and techno, so where can i find a 20-40htz tone so i can tune my subs?
the funny thing is when i had my amp volume at about half the subs sounded decent, now that i have it up almost all the way (probably somewhere beween 85-90%) i think they sound cleaner and hit harder.
one last thought, if the amp volume is realy high, but my bass is turned down alot at the HU do i still risk detroying my equipment?

the 'amp volume' you're talking about is called the gain, and its function is to match the amp to the voltage it's recieving. maximum gain generally corresponds to a voltage of about .8V, and you're probably running about 6V. so, at any volume level over about 1/5, you're clipping the amp. yes, it will be louder, but it will also be more distorted, and i'm actually rather surprised that something hasn't died yet.
in the attached file you will find a 27 Hz sine wave in a zip, which should be good for you. the zip is very small, the .wav is about 100 times larger - repeating patterns compress very well

ill go turn it down after work. but that means im goign to turn up the bass on the HU. I know the stock HU is holding me back but unfortunatly i have a 99 sable with digital climate controls. this means i can not replace my HU or if i could it wouldnt be worth the cost. Any other recomondations on how to get the most performance out my system with out being worried about damaging it (obviously)?

if you turn down the amp and turn up the bass, you've created the same problem in a different location. really - follow the tutorial, and if you find that your level of bass is still unsatisfactory, you need bigger and better equipment. or at least major tweaking of what you have now. sucks, i know, but it's much better to deal with less bass now and buy new stuff when you're ready than to kill your equipment (and therefore, concievably, your car, though this is rather rare) and have to go completely without.
