Anybody a headbanger from the 80's?

This band was pretty big with us back then. I really dug em.

They came out with a new album late last year and I just recently found it. It only has 2 original members and the singer isnt as good as David Wayne or even Mike Howe but he gets the job done.

Other than that, the songs kick ****! Plenty of heavy riffs and guitar solos.

If youre wanting some good throwback heavy metal, look this up.

    "The Dark"... Sheesh.

They did a silly cover of "Highway Star" on their first album, I think.

But I remember seeing them at Hammerjacks and they were pretty... Screamy. :D

Yeah, but 'Watch the Children Pray' is one of my alltime favorite songs!

Wayne was one of the great "screamers" wasnt he? ;)

Didn't one of them die recently? I seem to remember reading it somewhere.

I saw them back in '91 when they were the very first opening act on the Operation Rock n Roll tour which was co-headlined by Alice Cooper and Judas Priest.

What was that song, Badlands? Then another one that went "Lie a bit, do without"?

That guy was a screamer, that's for sure. But it wore thin for me.

I went thru a phase, about ten minutes, of trying to get into the screamy stuff. Metal Church, I thought, was the only one worth listening to for more than one or two songs.

King Diamond was one I tried. Mercyful Fate, right? Man, that stuff sucked hard. It was just bad. I wonder nowadays if King is embarrassed by that stuff. I sure would be.

I like that they did "Highway Star," because it showed me that they knew where they were coming from. The guy was no Ian Gillan, I mean, Gillan was the best screamer ever, but he was also a real singer with a huge range. And by doing "Highway Star," I got the feeling that the Metal Church guy knew his own limitations and I respected that.

Plus, the hot metal chick I was with at the time thought they were cool, so... :D

I LOVE Bon Scott. Bon Scott is THE ****.

But he's a **** singer. I mean, he's evil as all get out, but he's not a professional singer. Gillan was a serious singer with a huge range.

Bon Scott is awesome. But Gillan is "The Voice."

They're both awesome to me, although I do like and respect Purple a lot, I like AC/DC a lot more. Bon Scott era was the best, I think.

    Don't just think. Know.

After Bon Scott, AC/DC turned into a bunch of wimps.

    Complete and total agreement here.

Hey Micah, you ever hear anything about Bon really writing most if not all of the lyrics to Back In Black just before he died, but them not giving his estate any creditr for it?

I've heard that, but I think that I doubt it. I mean, I used to think "BIB" was a great rock album. It's got the riffs and the stuff, right?

But the more I listen to Bon Scott, and that's all the AC/DC I listen to now, the more I think that "BIB" is not so great, and suffers from the lack of Bon. Brian Johnson just does not have that certain something that Bon Scott had in spades. He was in touch with something dark and bad, the underbelly of the world, and Johnson just isn't. And the music suffers, it's just not over the top, effortless evil like the Bon Scott stuff.

Listen to a couple Bon Scott albums and then put on "BIB" and the missing link becomes obvious.

Who cares if Bon wrote the stuff on "BIB"? If he doesn't sing it, it sounds like crap. It sounds like a cover band trying to do Bon Scott.

Again, I agree 100% Brian was never nothing more than the best suitable sound alike replacement they could find.

What are your thoughts on David Lee vs Sammy?

I like DLR era VH best, but I wouldn't go so far as to call Sammy a worthless, no talent joke.

As I'm getting older, I'm actually starting to like Sammy era VH a lot more than I used to.

He has a better voice than DLR ever did, he can also bring a lot more to the band, specifically a 2nd guitar player (like when Sammy played lead on Loves Walks In), but despite all that, the DLR era was just better to me, both live and on the albums.

King Diamond was all falceto. Kinda like Barry Gibb from the Bee Gee's.

I really liked a lot of King Diamonds albums for the music. He always had a bad **** band. I just couldnt handle him.

Metal Church has a new CD out. Light in the Dark. I just downloaded off Itunes and it kicks ****!!

Plenty of very heavy riffs, pounding drums and screaming singers and guitar solos! Easily some of their best work.

Something else very cool, they do a remake of When the Children Pray from their The Dark album of the 80's as a tribute to David Wayne who apparantly died in May of last year!! I had no idea. And while this is an excellent version, the new singer doesnt do near as good a job as Wayne!

Bottom line is this is an outstanding CD and any fan of 80's metal will really enjoy it. Definitely worth a look.

I liked him with Extreme. Pornographiti is one of my favorite CD's (mainly because of Nuno's un-effin-believable guitar work).

Howerver, while he did a good job singing with Van Halen, he just didnt have the chemistry. Prancing around on stage like that just looked soooo wrong!

I'm with ya' --- I just had to toss it in.

As for Metal Church, I seem to remember a song called Ton of Bricks. The album cover was really glossy silver?

That was The Dark that had Ton of Bricks on it

    thedark.jpg

But the glossy silver cover was Blessing in Disguise which is the first album after Wayne left. Its a completley different sound but just about their best work.
