i guess that's the best way to put it... i guess since I like nick drake now I've automatically drove a Jetta and it's pretty obvious I watch movies like Garden State every night while wearing my burnt orange flip flops around the house with my concert shirt hanging down to my knees and my swim trunk from old navy to my ankles....

I don't associate with those who do all this. maybe girls here and there but that's kind of hard to avoid being 19 and all... and i'm not going to avoid it... buy not one of my friends wheres flip flops or drives a jetta....

personally - i throw a fit whenever someone comes over to my basement(oh ya.... i live in my parent's basement) and does not have socks on... I'll let them keep their shoes on because other people's feet are just gross.

I guess being 19 and almost never working with people my age really doesn't put me into that part of society... Most of my friends are 6-8 years older which I do not mind because we all have a good time... but friends my age who don't buy into all the things discussed here are very difficult to find.

yea... girls wore flip-flops to HS graduation... I know I didn't bust my butt for 4 years making the top 10 for some kids to take it just like any other day...

Flip flops, sandles are terrible. Who ever thought up of wearing something with holes built in? I usually get new shoes when mine get holes in them.

First, let me say that I actually probably agree with most of what you said, especially on the flip flops and sandals deal. I don't get or see any advantage of wearing sandals or flip flops, it's not like you're feet are really any cooler or anything...

Having said that...

How about a little tolerance for differences. If you're not like me and don't adhere to what I think is right, then you must be an idiot?

If you don't like looking at other people's feet, here's an idea - DON'T LOOK AT THEM! I don't particularly like looking at people who are morbidly obese, but I'm not about to tell all them to stay home or 'go lose some weight fat-****' - morebidly obese people are way grosser than someone's feet, and it's easy to ignore someone's ugly feet.

Maybe I wear sunglasses on my head because I don't feel like carrying them and don't want to get them all scratched up by putting them in my pockets with my cell phone and keys. Personally, I think it looks ridiculous, but then I really don't give a damn what anyone else thinks.

Typically, I'm anti-whatever is popular at the time, for the most part. I don't dig the fashions and music of today. I don't dig all the psycho-babble and everything being attributed to some mental illness or stress, no one taking responsibility for their actions, people over-medicating on Prozac and Valume and Viagra. I don't dig all these people driving their huge Excursions and Suburbans. I don't dig our overall wasteful nature.

Lately, the trend seems to be all these people coming out saying "All you people are just a bunch of sheep, you just follow the big corporate machine, you just like whatever is in style that week, can't think for yourselves". I can't tell you how many times I've heard that lately. And that, just like other trends, I don't dig. I've heard the word 'sheeple' dozens of times in the last week alone...

As for marketing shaping the music we hear, I agree and hate that fact - what is you do for a living again? I have no idea who Nick Drake is, and probably wouldn't like his music if it's anything like the rest of the stuff coming out today, but I'm not goind to condem someone else for liking his stuff.

As for your questions, I can't answer those because I don't listen to his stuff. In general though, I can say I listen to music for all those reasons.

singer//songwriter from the late 60's into the mid 70's... released 3 albums before his "accidental" overdose. he was heavily inspired by folk. i don't know what would compare to him today.

Lighten up, man, I got tolerance. I'm just stirring the pot a little here, trying to get people to think things thru, see what's in their heads... Make this forum the fun and exciting place it used to be.

I want to be the one who says, "You can't just say you like some stuff without supporting why you like it," otherwise, I don't understand why stuff is. I'm inquisitive, you know?

In reality, I don't give a **** about any of this stuff. Don't bother me if you look like a wacko with your glasses on your forehead (mine are clipped to my shirt front), or if you're morbidly obese and insist on wearing belly shirts, even with horizontal stripes on them, or if your shorts are really "longs," or that your big ugly hairy feet are all over the place. I don't care. I stay right the hell away from other humans so I don't have to deal with this stuff. I got tolerance coming out my ears. Otherwise, I'd be up in a clock tower picking off sheeple with a high powered rifle.

And "sheeple" is my word. Ask any of my friends. It's my goddamn word! I claim it! MINE MINE MINE! No one else better be using it, or I'll sue.

well, my original post was saying that I liked the Nick Drake music that I'd heard, but then I too got caught up in the ****. sorry.

What are the 3 original Drake albums? My search of amazon resulted in like 47 available CD's, which is where my initial confusion came from.

I haven't purchased any new CD's lately, I wouldn't mind trying out the 3 originals...

Micah, with all due respect because your posts are #1 in my book-but claiming to be anti-establishment as you clearly are; bucking the trend so to speak- well that's become an establishment and trend in it's own right. Basically it all comes down to the fact that trends exist because points of view exist. Points of view exist because people exist.

(edit) And Swerve, I'm going to check out Nick Drake. Thanks for the kind recommendation. I'm a fan of all musical genres and it's always healthy to try new things. I wish everyone subscribed to the melting pot. Society would be much better off as a result. This thread got retarded after the 1st post. I hope it dies soon.

From the Allmusic guide, which gives all three of Nick Drake's albums their highest possible rating (very unusual):

"...his pensive loneliness speaks directly to contemporary alternative rockers who share his sense of morose alienation"

Never heard of him. Thought he was somebody new. Didn't know he topped himself more than 30 years ago. May check him out if I become morose.
