Surround Receiver?

A friend of mine insists on getting a Bose surround system. I know...I know...I can't seem to talk him out of them even though he loves my Polks.
Anyway, he also is going to need a new receiver and I am trying to come up with a good recommendation. Anyway, I was thinking of suggesting something like an Onkyo TX-SR602 or a Denon 1905 or 2105.
Any thoughs or recommendations?

A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part...

what type of bose system and what are the specs? Most bose don't have big drivers and their subs don't look like they are hard to push. My dad has one bose system (can't remeber the name) off of an old sony which pushed out around 90 "sony" watts I believe. It wasn't the ES line for sure and it played loud enough to fill a fairly size bedroom(no est on room dimensions)
Depending on the listening volume and how much you want "out" of those bose than you can always spend more money, but I doubt and highly doubt you won't be dissatisfied with those receivers pushing a bose system.

Either of those will be fine....
But, I always recommend that when looking at receivers, look for pre-outs. This will allow you to keep your receiver and add a more powerful amplifier. Saves money in the long run....I don't think those receivers listed have pre-outs (although the Denon 2105 might have them).
Also, this may be a moot point, but keep in mind the Denons usually don't offer many digital coax inputs. The lower models usually only have one. Whether this is important is up to the buyer (I use 2 dig coax on my sys).
Overall, you can't go wrong with either one of those if the above doesn't matter to you.
I have seen some very good deals on the Onk 602, poke around..Receiver: harmankardon AVR235

I just bought a Denon 885, which is the 2105's brother unit. I couldn't be happier. Well, I could...still having remote issues. But that's the users fault, not the unit.
You are giving good advice...your friend would be happy with any of those receivers.

If he's getting Bose, it doen't even matter. You couldn't tell the difference between the cheapest Aiwa or Koss and the best Krell or McIntosh.

Bose doesn't publish specs, unless something new and radical happened over there. To work with they say that the impedance is 4-8. (?)
EDIT: Forgive me, I am mistaken, here are the provided specs.
Each speaker: 9 3/4"H x 14 1/3"W x 9 5/8"D (24.8 x 36.2 x 24.9 cm)
Pair in carton: 18 1/3"H x 24 1/5"W x 13 1/4"D (45.5 x 61.3 x 33.6 cm) 27.7 lbs. (12.6 kg)
In the user manual it say that they are rated 4-8 ohm and they'll give you a power range that the amp should be rated between. -
bose doesn't tell you "recommended wattage" hmmm interesting but i still think those will do just fine. Unless the other guy wants to upgrade the amplification down the road which means preouts shuold be a priority...

FWIW, I couldn't disagree with that statement more... -
dollar to sound ratio. the Bose speakers will more than likely cost more than a good set of Polks. but if he's already made up his mind.. it's to late i guess.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

hehehe i was waiting for that one myself.
i do like the bose 301's. -
The only Bose speakers I've ever semi-liked the sound of were the 501 and 601 models. They weren't that bad at all. Too bad, Bose went away from that type of design."SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,

I don't like the Bose sound, and they don't even belogn in the same discussion with Polk, so don't get me wrong - I don't like Bose.
But, I disagree completely with the statement that you couldn't tell the difference with a cheapo receiver and an expensive receiver with those speakers. If you can't hear the difference between an Aiwa and a Krell, on any set of speakers, then you're in the wrong hobby. -
so much hatred for bose!
it radiates in the air...of Club Polk. I wonder who would hate Polk Audio stuff...Bose and Monster are not liked, I assume? in a lot of places....

i don't hate bose for their sound quality. For music, at low to moderate volumes I still like bose sound better than Klipsch (no offense to those owners). The reason why I don't like Bose and many others here don['t like Bose is because they flagrantly underestimate the intelligence of the consumer net and of their loyal customers.

Chris
It's not so much hatred I suppose, well at least it is for their policy. I'm sure, if they cut their prices in half and released specs, they could be quite a respectable company, they have good ideas (No, not "their" patents) which could be great at well... A lower price. -
