Fry's has an ad in today's paper for an Onkyo TX-SR702B receiver with Monster THX Select 5.1 speaker system. First off, I never knew Monster made speakers. Secondly the price for this setup is friggin' nuts, $6999. Yes, $6999, not $699.99, but 7 large guys and gals. And it only comes with a consumer grade Onkyo. What gives with these speaks? Why is Monster so proud of these?

I looked at the monster web site for these and all the accessories.
How does a speaker stand get "THX" certified? Write a big enough check, and they'll certify "THX" listening chairs!

I wonder if any wealthy "audiophile" has ever paid to get a THX Cert for their ears.

Depending on the level of THX certification, it requires a certain level of response from a handful or more of very thorough tests. Its not a simple "THX, please put your logo on our stuff for all these bags of money".

A good move for Monster to use their brand identity to penetrate the consumer speaker market. One problem though -- they should price them accordingly!!! Maybe $1999. And don't bundle the freakin' speakers with a receiver. Instead, throw in some speaker cables, dammit.

Nice looking speakers, though. I'll bet they're as bright as the sun. Unless I overlooked it, they don't provide a frequency response in their specs. Hmmm.

That roundish subwoofer... looks like those things you put your feet on...

In another view...it looks like a space age portajon. The black part slides out to remove the crap.

But they do look nice though.

Another website for monster speakers, they have their new M-Design brand. Seems just a tad overkill, 56 drivers and 7ft tall? Reminds me of the new yamaha "Digital Sound Projector"

I especially love the action couch, $6000 for a leather couch with 4 transducers and a amp. You could get 4 buttkickers the amp, and a nice leather couch for less then half that amount. Ohwell.

I heard a brief A/B test, not at reference level vs. LSI 15s, CSI5 and FXi5s. The source was the Incredibles. They are pretty, but didn't knock me over.

I'll bet they can't compete with a 15 yr old set of $1200 SDAs.

    amulford,

Try looking at some of the manuals, quite a laugh. I looked at the manual for their $5000 godfather sub, and under specs was only weight and dimensions. The first page of the manual was a ad for monster power, the manual was a total 4 pages in adobe reader, probably 8 in total, with very sparse info. Assuming it is 8 pages, out of those 8 only 3.5 are actual info, since the last page half of it is more monster power stuff. I would personally be very upset if I paid $5000 for a sub just to be bombarded with advertising like this.

Right, that's the whole point. Just like the other marketing hype, you won't find that information. It's not a trade secret, but quite possibly the specs are so sad that anyone with the slightest clue would laugh at them.

They aren't aimed at the knowledgable market in any case. These are more geared to the "look what I got" crowd.

Those that don't know, don't know, that they don't know.....

Wow, this is sad-the amount of milking Monster does. But hey, Id love to be the person making this crap-imagine the sheer amount f money they generate. How much could it possibly be to make the crap they sell?

Did anybody try the new Monster brand tooth paste? They say it's suppose to enahance the overall character of your voice giving guys a good low end response and nice highs for women. Their mouth wash is suppose to raise your spl by at least 3db. I hear it's THX certified.

Seriously guys, we sholdn't get so angry at Monster. Instead we should be happy because we're smart enough to not get suckered into their crap. Oh btw, is it just me or is Monster and Lucasfilm sleeping together? They sure love those THX logos on their gear.

I have actually got a chance to hear these.

My grandparents have more money than they know what to do with and they fall victim to every marketing ploy that is out there... :(
I think in there house right now they have 3 bose wave radios, a bose acoustimass system in the family room, and now the complete monster speaker package in there new "media room"

How do they sound, well they are not bad in a matter of speaking. From what i found, they sound very similar to klipsch. Way to bright for me, almost to the point where i could not really reach the room blasting levels that i like to play music at when i really get into it because the highs really scratched my ears.

The monitors did not go very deep themselves but then that is probably because thx spec states the xover to be at 80hz, so i guess they really dont need to go much below that. They began to lose volume at about 60hz....... kind of suprising for two 7" mid-bass drivers. The imaging was really good on the monitors though, i found myself constantly checking to make sure the center channel was not on when i was testing 2-channel performance of the rig.

The sub was good, well actually it was pretty nice but no where near the 1,200 price tag they had on it.... but then i guess it would not be a monster product if it was not ridicously marked up. The sub played clean down to about 29hz then started to drop out.... it was not audible (by the spl meter) by 22hz. The bass put out by it was really punchy and musical but only going down to 29hz is kinda wimping out in my book.

So in the end it was not really my sound but not bad by a longshot, the whole setup kicks the crap out of the other bose equipment in the house but almost anything will. I think it would be a decent buy if the price was not so high. They should market it as an htib, then people that insist on getting the htib's would actually have something kind of decent.

I'm glad the setup isn't as bad as a Bose setup but still... dayum, that much?

Interesting hearing that, 29 Hz for a $1,200. I've noticed once the price tag get that high the question isn't, "how close to 20 Hz can you get?", but rather, "how far into the infrasonics can your sub go?"
Oh well, I think us guys get spoiled by honest-to-god companies like Polk who actually care for their customers...

If your couch can hold 500++ pounds it should get the THX logo because it can hold a genuine couch potato that watches too much TV.
