Y-Splitters on SACD/DVD player 5.1 outputs? Anybody done this for 7.1 playback?

my hk 235 has 7.1 inputs- yet my sacd/dvd sony player has 5.1 outputs... I've got 4 surrounds in my 7.1 setup- Has anyone ever used Y-Splitters on the two Surround outputs on the DVDPlayer to turn into 4 outputs to accomodate '7.1' playback for SACD?
I did this- so now when i listen to SACD on my HK's "8 Channel Direct" all 4 of my surrounds are playing; not just 2.
Yes- the left side & left rear speakers are carrying identical information between each other, as are the right side & right rear surround speakers- but It sounds pretty damn good- an improvement i'd say over standard 5.1 Inputs with no noticable drop in volume per speaker.
has anyone else tried this that has a 7.1 system? Or do you stick to 5.1 when playing SACD?

I would think that it might wreck the imaging and original intent as to how the music was heard but hey, if it sounds good to you go for it. You might need to run the surrounds a little quieter now since with extra speakers you will be getting more volume from the rear that normally. (like the usual 6 db gain from usin a splitter with a sub)

Yeah, I agree w/ michael- most people prefer point sources for multichannel music rather than the diffuse sound you get from surround speakers... but there's no reason why you couldn't do this.Gallo Ref 3.1 : Bryston 4b SST : Musical fidelity CD Pre : VPI HW-19

Yea, I tried it, when I first got into Hi-Rez. It was sort of "gimmicky" and I felt like it was just to much surround, over the top, unbalancing so to speak. After a bit I just went back to SACD in 2 ch and have been very happy.

Does that receiver have some type of DSP algorithm to convert the 5.1 into 7.1 (something similar to Pro Logic II converting stereo to 5.1)?Brian Knauss

no. My receiver has prologic IIx but that's irrelevant. To play SACD discs- I'm hooking up my receiver's "7.1 Input Jacks" into the SACD/DVD players "5.1 Output Jacks".
Then I use 2 Y Splitters on the SACD/DVD's 5.1 OUT JACKS (on the L&R Surround Jacks). This splits the rear- changing it from 2 speakers to 4 speakers- in order to accomodate a 4 surround speaker/ 7.1 setup).
No, it's not discrete 7.1. The LEFT SIDE Surround and LEFT REAR Surround play identical information.
The RIGHT SIDE Surround and RIGHT REAR Surround play identical information.
however, it expands the soundfield and when my FX Speakers are set to Bipole- imo it works for a more authentic surround experience for SACD Music.
