Removing a driver S6

I am a brand new vintage Polk owner. I bought the S6 speakers via EBay and received them today. While inspecting the speakers, I noticed that one of the active drivers is stuck in place, probably from being driven so hard that the voice coil jumped out of the magnetic gap and got stuck. I tried to remove the driver to see if I could manipulate the driver by hand to place the coil back in the gap. Unfortunately, the driver "seems" to have some kind of gasket that has transformed itself into epoxy.

Any suggestions? Don't be afraid to dazzle me with technical talk, I promise I won't get confused or lost.
So what if those speakers are as big as a Subaru and cost twice as much? You'll never have to trade these babies in and when you die, they can bury you in them.

Sounds like a call to the parts department^^^. Look up. Were those the ones with the $230 BIN?

I got the S6 speakers for $51, plus shipping. I see the replacement driver is $52. I will have to think long and hard before I do that. I may also troll EBay until a driver pops up. These speakers are for my garage, so I can afford to be patient.

On the other hand, in any case, I need to first figure out how to remove the driver without breaking anything.

Actually if you give them a call and tell them you're a member of Club Polk, you'll get a discount and free shipping:) . Benefits and you just got here.

They have a nice clear sound. The bass is not very extended, but nobody would expect heavy bass from a 6 inch driver. Only one of the mid-woofers is currently working, so I can't give a full evaluation. The peakers have a 6 inch driver, a six inch passive radiator and a 1 inch dome tweeter. They are 21 X 10 X 8 in size. They have some kind of plastic faceplate that covers the entire face of the speaker. They have rubber, vice foam surrounds on the drivers, so I can expect them to last forever, more or less.

S Series would be like a R series...

They used plastic cabs (bad thing)...

They used drivers from the RT series I think though.

BTW, 6.5" midbasses can give off thunderous bass.

    Have a nice day.

I have thunderous bass in my living room. A set of classic Infinity Kappa 6 speakers and a VMPS sub. Sometimes when the wife is away, I get to play. I like to play watch all the pictures hanging on the walls walk themselves until they are all hanging crooked. Quite an accomplishment in a living room that is about 650 square feet.

I have had the Infinities since before I had my wife (I bought them in 1991) and I have had the sub a little longer than I have had my 11 year old. This isn't about, "whiz bang" gee did I spend an inordinate amount of money on my system, it is about the sound.

    Who said it was?

    You did.

You have a nice system. But a 6.5" midbass can still move quite a bit of air.

Sorry it came across that way. I have been on too many boards where people seem more interested in saying how much they spent, than on concentrating on the sound.

As fdar as the 6.5 in woofer goes, I guess I will have to wait until I replace the defective one. But, I am impressed with the sound so far.

I had the RT5, it utilized the same exact woofer.

It didn't have alot of bass in audible sound wise, but it was very smooth and accurate, had a nice kick to it. I would imagine yours would be similar.

No one really cares about prices here man. Just look at the flea market, we want it cheap and mint... ;)

Sometimes the gasket can seize. Have you tried removing the tweeter or radiator and pushing the woofer from behind with your hand? Do yourself a favor and first make a note of where the wires are connected.

S4, S6, S8, S10 specs. are located at the end of the RTA 12C manual.

    S6
    1 x 1" dome tweeter
    1 x 6.5" driver
    1 x 6.5" sub bass radiator
    FR 30-25
    FR 45-23 (-3 dB)
    20-125 w/c
    8 ohms

Thanks. I'll try that. I would hate to break something on these sweet sounding speakers.

Well, I got the active mid/woofer out of the cabinet by taking out the passive radiator and pushing the active from behind. That was the good news. the bad news is that the magnet is loose.

Time to part with some hard earned money...
