Maggies - my first listen

Finally got a chance to listen to some Maggies (1.6's) at my friend's house the other day. I've heard them in a demo room at a high end AV store, but that ain't real listening. Just wanted to express a few thoughts on them.

First, these suckers are huge. They're almost as tall as I am. For that reason I expected a wider sweet spot even though I read otherwise. Well, you gotta be the critical listener type to appreciate Maggies because once you go one step outside the sweet spot, they loose their magic quite dramatically. Anyways, the Maggies sounded great. Like most people say, they provide the sound of a live performance. Outstanding detail. Decent bass (no sub needed for jazz and acoustical music, IMO). But what was most interesting was the way it handled string instruments. Every pluck on every string could be heard and felt. In this regard, the Maggies blew me away.
HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50” LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

Great writeup! I find the SDA's have a similar problem with the sweet spot. It used to bother me until I realized I didn't really enjoy non-critical listening that much anyway. When the sound is good enough it is fine to sit in one place for hours just to listen. As a matter of fact it seems to me that just like any event, it is meant for you to sit in the proper place to enjoy the show. Hey, if you want to move around that is fine but when you really want to wait until the song is over to go take a p!ss then you have reached a plateau. :)
